Why r so many collections being sold right now??

Bros, I have been wondering lately why it seems so many guys r getting rid of awesome Megos. Long time collectors moving creme de la creme pieces. Is it the economy, have they lost the luv , is there something they know I don't?? When we r seniors will our megos be worthless cause we'll either be dead or have one foot in the grave and the younger generations won't value them?? Opinions and observations please....

I can't speak for Mego collections but I noticed alot of rare toy collectons or pieces are going on the auction block .I personally think its the economy

I agree, I've seen this trend with alot of toy lines recently. The economy has hit so many hard....and then some people are just liquidating just in case the economy might affect them in the future.

I've been collecting Megos for over 10 years. There's always someone getting rid of their collection and someone else trying to pick up new pieces for their collection. I do think that the economy has led a lot of people to sell pieces that they would rather keep. I'm sure some people have lost the love, but I don't think that's the main reason for the increase in items available. I think the economy is the main reason for the large change in number of people selling.

I would think that would be the case to a large degree.

Over the last 10 years, I've seen the price of Knights, Western, Robin Hood, Space 1999 and Star Trek Megos drop a LOT when the reproductions came out. I've also seen the price on common WGSH and Star Trek drop as ebay and the online collector community have brought large numbers of these figures into the market. I usually end up buying at the wrong time and selling at the wrong time, but my collection is based on picking up the pieces that I want when I want them and trying to pay what I think is a good price in terms of the item's value to me. When it comes to my WGSH collection, I'm pretty proud of myself for picking up my boxed and carded figures for the pirces that I paid (it kind of makes up for what I spend on the Space 1999 guys! ) I think the best advice I've ever been given on collecting is this:

Pay what it's worth to you rather than try to guess what's going to happen to the value in the future.

It's all of the above that you mentioned. I've been collecting Mego's since 99/2000. Before Megos I was a Beatles collector and Comic Collector. 6 months after being introduced to Ebay back in '99 I started looking at megos and then it just completely took over my collecting habit for the next 9 - 10 years. My collecting passion was Beatles and Comics before I got into Megos...and I can now see that both of my collector passions have suffered. The collections have holes that I say "I thought I had that one..."

Mind you, the Mego stuff that you will see on my bigger list in the Marketplace will have what I bring to MegoMeet every year...my extra figures and Parts from years of building my collection piece by piece...So no, my collection will not be on sale. The Parker that I just put in the Marketplace is from my collection...and right now I'm contemplating on a few other pieces from my collection....but 90 - 95 % that will be up are strictly extras.

I almost sold off all of my collections after my Dad passed away in '04...There will come a time though, and I know everyone here that has been here or on any of the other lists, that you have to re-evaluate things/collections. There's a John Lennon song that has a great line...the song is "Beautiful Boy" from John's last LP Double Fantasy...and it says this:

"Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans."

The econonomy, life changes, finding another interest, the fact that summer is crappy time to sell so some people hold back until fall. It's a rich tapestry.

There aren't many "huge vintage toy finds" anymore, what's been fueling the collector market is people bingeing and purging. In my 26 years of doing this, I've left behind a wake of collections that would likely fill a tractor trailer. It's what makes the world go round.

Just by running these boards for 10 years I've seen the same pieces fall into 6-10 different hands, the names change but not always the stuff.

I'm not having to pay my electric bill with Megos, but I have sold some of my better items to last few years because I can use the money in better ways. And while prices are depressed and it's not the best time to sell I do think the best times are behind us. I don't expect the economy to ever be in a state where lots of people are regularly spending thousands of dollars on old toys. (I wonder how many Megos were purchased with money from real estate windfalls the last decade?) So I say sell em while they still have value if that means anything to you, and if it doesn't then keep them and enjoy them and take advantage of a weak market and build a great collection.

My bottom line was I don't draw the same pleasure from high end packaged Megos I used to. We just rent these things anyway.

yes the econonomy is not good.....people cant afford to buy like they used to... but if someone could tell me that my whole collection would only be worth a $100 in 6months time it would still be here with me.... my loves for the figures not the money..an investment yes....but luckily at this present time ...i can afford not to lose my megos...
i get a lot of pleasure looking at these toys ....and hope that i wont end up being forced to sell them out of being desperate for money ...its a buyers market i guess.... i do think the repro figures have caused some damage aswell .......

I would bet on the economy being key factor in this. I have seen a slow decline in prices to pieces that werent in reach as far as money goes. The economy has hit home to alot of us.

Very well said...If anyone would be able to speak on this it definitely would be you and a couple of others here that have been on every list/site there has been that has focused on Megos.

I studied it for four years, that's the fancy gentlemen way of spelling it. By adding the extra "no" it lets others know I'm in the secret club and is in no way a side effect of the sleeping pill i took last night.
