is it just me or are megos getting more expensive?

    hi all,
do you guys think megos are getting more expensive say compared to 2-3 years ago? i've been trying to obtain some megos on ebay and man, let me tell you, it hasnt been easy!!! mint ones go for high $$$ but even grey head/zombie figures that normally go for $50 are doubling in price. patience is key but sometimes frustration set in. i guess supply is dwindling, i mean how many megos could possibly be out there? and of course there's always collectors deciding to sell their collection every once in a while so that helps out with the supply. i guess i'm just venting.

I actually track pricing and brought this up during the repro's are killing the hobby discussions we have about every six months or so. Prices have risen dramatically as I can see. Even common pieces like Hulk and Spidey have risen dramatically in the past 18 months or so. I can remember passing on these figures at $8 - $10 and now many reach the $20+ mark on a regular basis. I think new collectors are joining the ranks and have made these figures that most of us have 1, 2, 3, or more in demand and have caused an increase in price. Just look at the MM trading cards and some of the prices "free" cards have drawn on ebay. There definately has been an increase in Mego interest in the past year or so. I don't know if the Famous Covers/Signature Series lines sparked some interest, the JLA animated figures were also very popular, Robot Chicken may have played a part, and EMCE toys also. I'm also seeing younger collectors who were not even around in the early 80's when Mego shut down, so they were obviously influenced by some outside force. Ebay also has spread out the amount available to a wider audience, and that would have an affect on supply. Just have to search harder for those great mego deals. They're getting harder and hareder to find.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

What amazes me is the fact that a few years back in Toyfare, they said the Mego craze was pretty much done. Doesn't seem that way to me.

i'v talk to a few people who actually think that because of all the remakes like ctvt or the new trek figures, that mego demand and prices are going down. i actually agree with you that the demand is higher now than a few years back. and also the prices are higher too. ebay makes it a little tough to get stuff but, sometimes you can get a sweet deal here and there. i think megos are more popular now than a few years ago, and it doesn't seem like it might slow down. for now anyways.

Trappy, my friend I always speak of is all Mego crazy now and is all about coming to Megomeet next year! He and I get together and trade parts once a week now, it keeps him and myself happy and in touch (we've known each other since 1st grade) and we are just as Mego crazy as we were when we were young!

I've almost stopped collecting everything else to make and collect the ones I've always wanted! So as far as I'm concerned Mego still stands strong after all these years and no wonder the prices are going up due to Robot Chicken and the fact that the Star Trek Megos are a hit! So grab em while you can!

Whilst many prices have risen, I think some figures have relatively come down in price.

Dang it! I was in that auction until it went past $150! I also got outbid on a loose sweet Mr. Fantastic when it went past $75.

Until last week, I hadn't bought a Mego in about 10 months... in my experience, prices for the loose, all original stuff that I look for have noticeably increased since then.

Some of you guys are mixing apples with oranges.

The figures that have been reproduced (or are for sure going to be reproduced) like the Knights, Pirates, Western Heroes, Robin Hood, Space 1999, Mad Monsters, Star Trek, POTA, have come way down in market price in general.

The World's Greatest Super Heroes have not come down in price because they have not been reproduced. I agree with the general feeling in this thread that high grade loose WGSH are getting harder and harder to find and generally command higher prices - for now. If they are reproduced by EMCE or someone else, then I do not believe that loose Minty all original WGSH will hold their value. I think that boxed WGSH will also come down in market price, too.

I certainly agree with your former point, but as for boxed figures, what if the reproduction figures' boxes were different from original Mego boxes? Some loose collectors may end up going for the repros, but boxed collectors would have no choice but to continue looking for originals (I doubt anyone would be looking for just original empty boxes to throw a repro figure into). Do you think that boxed prices would also come down because you believe that they would be harder to sell due to buyers being suspicious of possible repro parts on the figure inside the box (something they wouldn't have to worry about with a sealed carded figure)? Although, now that I think about it, this is a possibility that could occur now too.

                            YES.

Although it is a possibility now, too, because there are a lot of repro parts out there, the availability of repro figures and parts will go up dramatically if the WGSH are reproduced, and I believe that this event would increase doubt and uncertainty to a much greater level in the marketplace like it has with the boxed Legends, Mad Monsters, etc.

Yes, I see your point. I could especially see some of the more expensive, in demand figures with a lot of accessories (I'm looking at you, Green Arrow!) taking a hit in value.
