R.I.P. Mego Warehouse Wall Mural 1977-1996

Some of you may remember that Wee67 and I went to the old Mego Warehouse on Long Island a couple of years ago.

While it was a great trip overall and the experience of being "on the inside" of the warehouse was phenomenal, we were disappointed to find that the mural in that building (which spanned the entire back wall of the back building) was not Mego related at all.

What we learned is that the actual mural we were seeking was in the building next door which was at one time owned by Mego but was now occupied by another company.

I followed up with that company and spoke to the real estate people, etc. etc. and in short they acknowledged that there was a licensed artwork mural there in the break room but would not give us permission to see it.

Fast forward to yesterday when I was introduced to someone by a mutual friend that works for the company that owns the building. I talked to her this morning and she agreed to reach out to some people she knows and ask them about it.

Sadly, she called me back a few minutes ago and told me that she was told the mural is no longer there. Apparently it was painted over back in the 1990's by the company that bought the company after Mego.

I'm very saddened by this as I'm sure all of you are as well. Our only hope is that perhaps the person she spoke with is mistaken. She is going to contact some people in the building and see if they will double check. She is also going to ask them to be on the lookout for any signs of Mego Corporation in the facility itself. You may recall that last time at the other building the building manager found old Mego stamps on the wall that he had never seen before so maybe all hope is not lost.

Thought you would like to know!

Makes no sense. A couple years ago the company acknowledged an art mural in the break room, but refused to give you permission to see it. Now supposedly it was painted over in the 90s? Doesn't follow, so that lends credence to there being some confusion.

It would be sad if it wa painted over.
As far as other Mego evidence goes, didn't someone here (Brian?) showed off a Mego door knob or something? Maybe there's still more of them?

I agree with you and was thinking the same thing.

The only thing I can figure is that maybe they knew it wasn't there and that's why they wouldn't let us see it....because it didn't exist!

The acknowledging it could have been kind of mocking us behind our backs.

I'm not sure what their motivation was but this lady is a close friend of a colleague and I'm sure she is being straight with me. Now, whether or not they are being straight with her is another question...but she is going to confirm it with some other friends that actually work in that building.

I don't know about this woman, but I know I don't trust Dan

Seriously, though, I am disappointed. I really thought Dan and I would get into that third and final building. Who knows, maybe we'll make a trip anyway just for the heck of it.

BTW, Here's a shot of Dan in the lobby of the Bohemian warehouse that we did manage to get in. Gotta love the wood paneling still being around-

And here's a shot of a few heroes returning home

I think the doorknob belongs to Benjamin (Imp). There is a definite possibility that something might still exist. As Dan mentioned, the manager of the warehouse we did get into discovered some stamps on the walls that remained from the glorious days of Mego. They were basically small markers saying where certain items were kept. There is a rumor regarding an underground tunnel that connected one of the buildings we were in to the one we did not get in. It said a forklift was left in the tunnel when it was sealed off. Maybe there are cases and cases of Mego figures down there as well. Who's got the dynamite?!?!?

Wow. I remember that day when you went to seek out that painting. It was the same day both of you came to my house and we had lunch. 2 years already!

I think that statement dates us more than the fact that we collect toys from the 70s! I remember watching Geraldo Rivera and his team opening Al Capone's vault! Although they didn't find anything, it was a pretty interesting show about Al Capone. Plus, it also gave us Weird Al hosting a special to uncover the secrets of Al Capone's glove compartment.

I love the fact that you guys took the time to search the warehouses out. The whole history is as fascinating as the toys themselves.
                          It's all good!

Aha, it was Benjamin, thanks Bill.
That tunnel story is still so cool, it's fun to imagine there are boxes and boxes still sealed in there. Someone call Scooby and the gang

Now I'm going to dream about breaking into the sealed tunnel and finding cases of Logan's Run & Greatest American Hero figures in perfect mint condition. I'll carry the cases home, open them, bask in the glory of newly discovered Megos, only to wake up and be bummed that it has all been a dream.
