    Great thread, Scott.

I actually got a lot out of it. I've always kinda fought with the whole issue when I want to sell something in here. People's responses are giving me a bit more insight.

my initial instinct is "seller should start with some sort of price"... that said, I know that sometimes I honestly don't know what I should ask for a figure (usually because I overpaid for it lol )
but I like the idea of at least starting with some number and "if I am too high, make me an offer"... sound advice and a great thread!

I usually just pass on by if an price isn't set. I agree with most others in that the seller should be the one to name a price. While they can post pictures and give as much detail as possible in the end the seller has the advantage of seeing the item first hand and up close and personal. Besides they know how much they have invested in the item anyway. As a buyer you hate to insult someone with an offer to low but want to not over pay also.

As a seller I state prices. As a buyer I simply ignore sales that don't have prices. I have found "make offer" people often already have a number in mind and it is usually too high. They are almost always offended with the offer - and I don't care since they asked for it.

I've only made a few offers. I try to come close to what I feel the price should be. It never works out. I avoid these sales now.

This has been a pretty interesting thread. I see a lot of posts with "make me an offer" or just no mention of price at all. I'm surprised that pretty much everyone on here says they avoid those items, yet there are so many items posted every week without a price. Very good to know as both a buyer and a seller!

Side note: Although I usually post a price when selling stuff, I've listed a few items as "make me an offer." Usually when I do that, it's because it's an items that I simply don't want at all and I would probably get rid of them for the cost of shipping or a trade for anything that seems cool. I rarely get any offers on those items and now I know why! I guess it's better to list them as "$5 plus shipping or offer me your junk in trade!"
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

This thread is overwhelmingly in favor of the Seller listing a price. No surprise there for me. I hate making an offer when I don't know what they want.

As a buyer, of course I want a low price, and as a seller of course I want someone to offer me more than it's worth. That's economics, but realistically I have to know roughly what the seller wants or I simply move on to the next listing, done.

That is a different ballgame. Listing a price AND saying make offer puts a new perspective on it. The buyer knows what you would like to get so they know what ballbark they need to be in.

Absolutely nothing wrong with "$40 or make offer". If it i something I wanted and it was a hot item i would offer the 40 if demand was low or i wasn't dying to have it - I would go $30-$35. Any lower than that I prob wouldn't even offer - unless the posting sat for a long time with no bites.

Make an offer should always be proceeded by "I will entertain any offer over "XXXX" then both parties know where they stand
                      "Thats the ticket laddie"

Yeah, the "Make an Offer" just seems to be a game to try to suck more money out of the seller. Generally not the type of person I want to deal with. Even in the price is too high, I respect the seller stating a price and what THEY feel the item is worth; it's up to the buyer to decide if that is the value to them.
