I find the complaint that Mego style figures are not detailed enough kinda funny considering a cloth uniformed figure more closely resembles a real human wearing clothes than a piece of painted plastic, and the articulation also comes closer to a real person than many of the smaller figures out there.

In short, Mego's are shaped like real humans.

Many younger people were brought up on He Man figures

That's why today figures must be steriod ridden freaks

Also, because of the male nerd collector factor, most female action figures are made with huge non realistic boobs.

They certainly aint making them for girls to play with.

I agree with Mikey01 completely. I love the Venture Bros. and I also love my Megos.... but they just don't mesh well at all. The proportional style of the characters just doesn't work here.

Although these sculpts are great (I've really been impressed with BBP's sculpts), Dean and Rusty look just passable with their oversized heads. But, have you taken a look at Brock? It's almost enough to make you cry. Deep down in my gut I seriously doubt something so hideous would ever see the light of day. But, I have been wrong before.

Megos are a mixed bag not everyone gets if they didn't grow up with them. It's almost purely a nostalgia thing in my mind. Making new Megos of older shows like Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows, and the Flash Gordon movie just makes sense. It targets the era of the original Mego-buying crowd. Making new Megos of Lost however is just a really strange choice to me. Modern LOST fans are sure not to get it. And does making a modern show as Megos kind of negate the classic 70's mold charm for Mego collectors?

I grew up with the Worlds Greatest Superheros and loved them to death. I was only five at the beginning of my really getting into them but even then I hated all of their little “Mego” problems, which was a 70's toy maker thing of their not worrying about being super-accurate. Thor wasn’t buff. The THING had a cloth costume and not a sculpted body. These killed me. Cap had no gloves. Speedy had nylons. Wonder Woman was odd looking.

As an adult, I look back at them with love and remember their charm. I played with them FOREVER, into my early teens. But for me as a super hero fan I thanked god for the day action figures finally entered the Marvel Legends/DCUC era. I only had to wait THIRTY YEARS! sigh...

As I've collected toys as an adult. I’ve looked at the classic Mego WGSH thinking to re-buy them, so fond my memories, but seeing them as they actually are... I just can’t do it. I love them, but they're goofy looking. Better left to my memories than be not appreciated on my shelf. I think more realistic Mego licenses like Star Trek, regular humans on regular human bodies, have withstood time much better. I actually did buy the re-released Trek to satisfy my Mego jones. Now, to have Mattel remaking the classic WGSH and update them, it might be what it takes to get me hooked on those again if done right.

I TOTALLY get the old Mego collectors wanting the new Mattel figures to look retro and not updated, but as a new consumer, I really only want to buy them if they look modernized or updated.

Neither of us are wrong. We’re just different ends of the same demographic.
Shame it wouldn't be feasable to release a character at the same time in both styles-retro and new.

That said, for me, I think the new Green Arrow looks amazing. Black Manta looks amazing. Two-Face looks amazing. Aquaman’s COSTUME looks amazing. (silence.........)... but I don’t think they are making either crowd happy with those Aquaman, Superman, or Batman heads, and those characters are the huge deciding factors for me as a possible newbie for jumping into that new line. I think the new Twilight Zone figures however are absolutely brilliant.

So to answer the original question, modern license toys on Mego bodies just seems like an odd choice, and maybe people think of the old 70's school of production as opposed to what could be done with them now in 2000's tech when they complain. I hope the Venture Bros figs are a huge success that opens doors to modern collectors and Megos. I don't watch the show, but the figs look okay.

I personally think the Lost figs look hideous and won't be winning over any new fans to Mego though those, but it will be interesting to see if the classic Mego fans embrace them.

I spent four days at Toy Fair with the Venture Bros. mego figures on display
and no one voiced the opinion that they should be "real action figures".

Staff from McFarland, NECA, Sideshow are came to take pictures and admire
them. The guys from Mattel, Hasbro, Marvel, DC, specialty 1:6 hyper-realistic
figures, and LEGO were all digging them.

Bottom line - the characters are what people want, the format is secondary.

I bet the toy people get it and love them. I also bet if people could see them in person and had the creators standing in front of them, they wouldn't be so quick to write them off.

I agree with william shatner's toupee. (That was a fun sentence to write.) I doubt very many people on this board are big McFarlane fans, but I really liked the LOST figures they did, and regret not getting them when they were in stores. (I was a latecomer to the show but now it's my favorite.) The new LOST figures are leaving me cold. I'm just not convinced it's a good fit. Some properties just fit better with the Mego aesthetic. The Twilight Zone figures look beautiful. Ming looks beautiful.

And ditto the Mattel figures. I don't want goofy superheroes. I don't want an odd-looking Wonder Woman. And I don't want dark, gritty and realistic. I want clean, beautiful, on-model, quintessential superheroes that are 8-inches tall.

                    EDIT: Like Green Arrow!

When other parents see my kids with megos they want them for their kids. I think people who didn't grow up with megos were given dumbed-down choices for toys (and music and culture, but I digress). My oldest son loves his mego batman and spiderman and plays with them constantly while my daughter loves Spock the most. I think there has been a void that is finally being filled thanks to Paul Clarke. I am very grateful.

Young kids love Megos, and most people our age respond to them. It's the snarky 18-30 demographic that will ***** about these.

It's a bold experiment to do Venture in Mego form. There's really never been such a stylized property done as Megos.

I got asked what I thought about Venture being an 8" line last fall sometime, my God it made perfect sense to me. Not only because I'm a Mego nut but because if you follow the show, that's totally what Venture Brothers toys would look like.

That's the show's favour and I know a lot of disgruntled people are discounting Jackson Publick's praise of the line but he's sincere.

As for dislike of Mego, it's just all preference. If the Venture brothers were 1/6th scale, we'd all be *****y too.

Most people under 35 don't even know how to pronounce the name Mego so I don't take their opinions on bodies too seriously.

The point I'm making here, or tried to make with my post, was that I personally think it had more to do with the actual time period that these toys were made in, than the actual toys themselves. If megos were never released in the 70's and they just all of a sudden popped up now, in today's toy and film market, they simply would not be as well received. Yes, WE like them because of what they represent, but again, like I said, if they had never existed in the 70's, I seriously doubt they'd have even the "cult" following they have now. It's all about the 70's, I'm tellin' ya!
