Why aren't Megos as well liked outside this forum?

It's disheartening to read post after post bashing the Venture Brothers line sight unseen based entirely on the fact that they're Megos.

I can understand being a fan of traditional sculpted action figures, but how can you be so anti-Mego? I just don't get it.

I'm actually excited for these....I tried to watch Venture Bros....yet I didn't think it was that funny! I'm gonna give it another try and buy these figures no matter. I just hope there isn't any Retro-ish design flaws! Other than that count me in here!

I disagree to some Level that they are Not well recieved outside of this Fourm and Website. Mego's are Mentioned Repeatidly in Toyfare, and shows like RobotChicken ,... and even the Venture Bro's have Epsiode(s) with them or the Mentioning of them. I think they are just as Popular right now ..., as they were in 76 on the Shelf.

In Reguards to Venture Bro's .... I think it's Pretty Ironic so to speak for them to go the Route of Mego with Figures. If anyone Has ever, ever watched the Show,.. It seriously Makes Sense on So many Different Level's ..., the Consistant Addressing of Pop Cultural Referances and Spoofs on things and Ideas from "YesterWorld" Being Most.

      Nobody's gonna like everything I suppose ....

As far as Being 'Anti-Mego" .... , Yeah I can relate to Micro-Naughts.

Most RTM posters are children of the 80s and 90s, and they have no Mego sentimentality.

Perhaps the answer to your question is that the people who love Megos the most are all here, therefore it would be impossible for megos to be as well liked outside this forum.

I know what you mean though, in the same sense, especially as a customizer, I get annoyed that there are so many cool parts in 1:6 scale but hardly anything in 1:9.
I guess it goes both ways.

Speaking as one of the aforementioned children of the '80s, I love Megos--but it stems from a love of all kinds of toys. I love the few vintage Megos that I own, just as I do my SuperPowers and Star Wars. But when I look at the new Lost figures that are coming out, I have to wonder if "Mego-style" is the best format for them. Just like I think it would be weird if McFarlane did Superfriends, or Mattel turned Barbie and Ken into modern horror icons. (I mean, I'd go for those, because I'm weird, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to.) I'm not really familiar with Venture Bros.

Come to think of it, what I really want is diversity--and the way licenses are doled out works against that. I want everyone to be happy. I'd love to see Mego "Pirates of the Caribbean", but if those were the only figures that were available, I'd understand if people who collect 12-inch and NECA/McFarlane-type figures were disappointed. Maybe that's what's going on.

              Me, too!!!

Ooops, I think I just went a bit off-topic here --though I agree with what some are saying that the younger collectors just don’t have as much exposure to the Mego greats as we children of the late 70's / early 80s.

Poor kids don’t know that they missed.

I don't read any other forums but speaking just for myself I think it's STRANGE making a Mego line (Venture Brothers) that depicts unrealistically proportioned humans.

Mego has done animated figures before (possibly Star Trek and WGSH's) but these cartoon characters were drawn to human proportions therefore translated to the Mego format well.

Yep. It's all about the 70's. It was just a phenomenal decade to be a kid. I was 2-12 myself, and that part of my childhood was pretty much perfect. In my humble opinion, due for the most part, to the great films, toys, comic books and magazines I consumed as a kid during that time. Bottom line is; If you weren't there, you'll just never quite get it. it was something you had to be there to experience...

I saw someone talking about the DC Retro Action Heroes talk about the Mego figures as being the worst figures ever made. I couldn't disagree more. Megos were the first toys I ever had. When I started getting Star Wars figures I wished they were like my WGSH figures. I never understood why action figures went smaller. The 8" cloth costumed super heroes were always my favorites. Although the Gabriel Lone Ranger line was a close second.

Another complaint I've seen is that Mego style figures aren't detailed enough. Today's collectors are all about detail. Kids don't care. They just want something cool to play with. All toys these days are made for collectors. No one just makes action figures for kids to play with anymore.

Action figures got smaller 'cos in the 70s the price of oil (needed to make the plastic) went up and it was just cheaper to go smaller. That's the reason GIJoe went from 12" to 10" to 3 and 3/4". I'm just glad we still have our wonderful 8" Megos around (no matter what form they might take!)

That and having oversized steroid induced bodies... That trend has seemed to go down a little bit, but it should be eliminated altogether.

I guess that goes for a lot of people here, but I never had these as a kid. I only found out about Megos when I was 28, but I love 'em. And we have a lot of members here in that same situation. I love their charm and the fact that they're not statues.
