I don't think Disney is Topps. Correction, they are definitely NOT Topps. I don't think this is comparable even to Big Lots, which did not have their Mego exclusives online.
I have no idea how this will play out for those of us dependent on the online Disney Store, as I have never purchased any Disney exclusives before, but Disney still has some physical stores, along with the in-park stores, and you may even see these in the online Marvel Store too. I think Mego will make a lot of Marvel Mego figures to satisfy this deal, so I am hopeful about these.
I get that many feel they have been burned by Topps (whether you missed them, or feel that you over paid when ZLC ended up with most of the stock later, both cheaper in price and shipping cost). But for some, Walmart has been a tough retailer for ANY exclusives (Hello, Marvel Legends and McFarlane DC Multiverse collectors!), and Green Arow is still highly sought after and he wasn't an exclusive anywhere.
Maybe it's my luck in finding the things I want, but I hope we as a community can pump the brakes a little before we go all negative on some exciting announcements, even if how-to obtain these figures causes some pause.Comment

Except this was Disney dictating terms as to how the Marvel Megos could be done. The alternative to Disney only wasn't Walmart/Amazon or whatever, it was they don't get to do Marvel characters. Disney has all the leverage here, they don't need Mago to have their stuff out there, and if Mego was going to be able to do Marvel figures at all, they had to do it the way Disney required. That's very different tot he way the Topps deal (or the Big Lots deals went down where Mego was exploring different paths to market, this was the only path to market Mego had if they were going to do Marvel.
It's not ideal, but the alternative was no Marvel Megos at all.

Exactly.
Plus, these 20 (!) figures become a test balloon for Mego working with Disney on other properties. If this is successful, perhaps there is more appetite for Star Wars etc. to happen... perhaps even with a better distribution model.

Ordering from shopdisney.com is usually pretty painless. As long as Mego is able to make enough to meet demand, everyone should be able to get these, I would think. While Disney Stores have certainly dried up, there's still one about an hour and a half away from me.
Marty did allude to a certain Galxaxy Far, Far Away in Brian's livestream last night. I'm sure several people's heads exploded.Comment

Big news indeed. Atlas is definitely a surprise but I really have no connection to that Universe at all. Their superhero line always seemed like an oddity in the history of the genre. Will we really get Marvel Megos as soon as December 2024? I'm excited but also worried. I buy just about all my Megos from BBTS and I guess that won't work with the Disney exclusive deal. BBTS has great international shipping rates which makes them a big exception. Guess those Marvel figures are really going to bankrupt me.Comment

On one level though, this whole thing with Disney kills off any remnant of the original notion (from the relaunch in 2018) where people would be able to go and see/purchase these in stores again. Target was somewhat successful but the choice of characters was questionable, Walmart was more miss than hit, and Big Lots was a complete failure. Part of the appeal- a HUGE part, I'd argue- was the recreation of the retail experience. Now that this is going to be all point/click/pay/repeat online, you may as well spend your time at antique stores and flea markets trying to find originals "out in the wild" (so to speak). Or buy them off of eBay, because at least you'd be getting an original instead of something that's being recreated in order to get people to spend money.

Well, all toys are created to get people to spend money. Collector toys even more so--it's discretionary, luxury spending. The vintage toys were a money-grab, and ebay certainly is. I can't hit flea markets, I can barely attend Mego Meet occasionally.
I hate exclusivity and most online shopping, but that genie is out of the bottle and there's no return.
As for repros--I love them if well-done. Joes, Mego and MOTU--despite the frustrations (and I'm frustrated a lot) repros have brought me a lot of pleasure, collecting and creating.WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.Comment

I just saw a vintage Atlas comics ad on a vintage FB page recently. I remember as a kid seeing The Brute comic on the rack at a downtown Woolworths but that's about it.But kind of excited about it maybe seeing a character that will strike a memory.Comment

Yes they are, however the reason they were being made in the 70 and the reason they're being made now are two very different thing. It may be discretionary spending for us (since the relaunch), but back in the 70s it was something that our parents, grandparents and other family members did for us. I'd also argue that the original Mego figures weren't a money grab as such. They had so-so success with Action Jackson, and took a gamble on licensing superhero characters to try and compete on a larger level. Said gamble succeeded, and- as a result of that- they grew their business accordingly. In turn, that succeeded because we saw everything in retail stores (as well as comic books and Christmas catalogs). When all that it taken away and replaced with exclusivity- which only gets more exclusive over the course of time- the heart and soul of it all is literally replaced with... something that's not so appealing.

I have concerns about the upcoming Marvel figures that go well beyond the exclusivity to Disney.
To the point that TheXFactor has been making, you’re selling nostalgia here. I’ll offer up a rather odd analogy:
The first two waves of Mego WGSH figures were like watching a tape or video capture of the 1966 Batman TV show that originally aired on your local UHF station in the mid 70s with all of the original commercials and station identifications intact.
With Wave 18 and 19, it’s becoming more like watching the 1966 Batman TB show on MeTV with Medicare supplement commercials. The show may be the same, but it’s a much different experience..
What are these Marvel Megos going to look like with the Mouse sticking his pointy little nose in everything? Are they going to be the same painstakingly amazing recreations of the original figures and packaging that the first two WGSH waves were? Are they going to focus on the original characters Mego released (plus a few obvious admissions like Daredevil) or are they going to be full of X-Men, Deadpool, Symbiotes, and other characters that didn’t even exist or were barely relevant to the average kid reading Marvel comics and playing with Megos circa 1975?
I guess it comes down to why you’re in the game. If you’re in it for Marvel figures done in the Mego style, you’re probably going to be happy. If you’re in it for the pure nostalgia and recreating fond memories of your past, then the jury is still out.
