I guess if I didn't collect toys and comics, I'd have no mortgage left to pay and would have no fun either. I checked into the insurance years ago and it would have cost like $100 for every $10,000 insured/per year. But you needed an itemized list and a professional appraisal. I figure if the house burns down, I'm just done collecting.sigpic "It's like you're unravelling a big cable-knit sweater that someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting..."Comment

I've thought about it but while I've spent a decent amount I've done it in spurts so the overall value isn't earth shattering. The dollar value would have to be much higher for me to consider another monthly bill. Plus I'm on those people who despises insurance. Pay for something month after month and never get anything back if you never use it. If you do have the "gall" to use it you get charged more monthly. All because you had the audacity to use something you've been paying for for years.Comment

sorry about that, was just opening to discussion and meant the statement solely as a compliment!
... value, again, is relative, and on this board I think the sharing of our collections (via pictures, etc) do far more to detail value than a generalized statement...
but, I didn't think about possible negative consequences, my initial comment was edited, up to folks to edit theirs.

But it doesn't matter, right, because I sold my collection.Comment

Back around 2000, I lived on the 9th floor of a very old building. I woke up one morning to the sound of sirens, a hallway full of black smoke, and firemen evacuating the building. The apartment below mine was ablaze with flames shooting out the window. The only thing of value in my place was my collection. So its around 6am, the firemen are banging on my door, and I'm in there throwing every Mego I had into two large garbage bags. They didn't all fit, and I had to leave all the playsets behind, but I think I got all the boxed and carded expensive ones. I ran out with a bag in each outstretched arm trying for them not to bang into anything or anyone. If people only knew what were in those bags.
My Megos survived as did my apartment, but even after going through that, I didn't learn. I've never had my collection insured. I do however always keep two large garbage bags near by, just in case.

I used to keep track of everything I spent for years. I swear I have been keeping the postal services in business...even adding that up would be painful. Now I just get stuff and enjoy it and try not to think about it too much.Comment

I have about 3,000 comics (ALL from early's 80's back to 60's...mostly Superman)
My collection includes hundreds of 70's figures.
Maybe I should consider insuring them.Check out my website: Megozine Covers - HomeComment

The value of my collection is modest, compared to so many other members here. The only ones that would be tough to replace would be my carded apes. However, this thread has given me a lot to think about.
MikeJ, thanks for sharing that story. I’m glad you didn’t suffer any losses.

might not be a bad idea... I think my buddy Charlie losing his house and collection, and the fact that I had to evaluate mine, got me to thinking that maybe sometimes folks just don't consider or realize that value they have and often times take for granted, and that opening a discussion might benefit folks"Time to nut up or shut up"-Tallahassee
