So, have you considered how much....

.... you have spent on your collection...

or a better question, what it "might" be worth (and I know value is subjective and changes from day to day it seems)...

I had to renew my collectible insurance policy this month, so I took an "inventory" of my collection... and I was shocked at not what it may or may not be worth, but what I had spent on it...

so, got me to thinking, do others know what their collection is worth, and if so, have you insured it!

I know there are only a handful of folks out there with mega $ collections, but what about the rest of us...

have you thought about it hm

I don't have a way to figure out what I've spent on my collection, because I've managed to get some really good deals(usually someone who had no idea what was on their yardsale/show table) as well as pieced a lot of figures together. I've also bought auction lots, kept a few pieces to upgrade figures as well as accessories, and then sold/traded the rest. So the actual amount would be hard to figure. However, it would be fun to look all my Megos up on eBay using the Completed Auctions feature and find out what similar figures went for.

I've often thought about it Rick. My collection is not insured right now. I was kinda waiting until it was all together in one place so I could take photos and inventory and get a truer value of what it's worth and to see if having it insured would be a good idea.

But that begs the question - do I just cover Mego or everything I collect like DCUC?

Rick, I don't know if others who have watched you put your awesome collection together would be shocked by what you've spent.

Seriously, I rarely think of "worth" or "value" or even what I have spent. When I think in terms of dollars, I almost always think in terms of "delta," meaning what I have sold minus what I have spent. That is the most crucial number to me. Like just about anyone else here, I can not afford these toys, so that is how I have to think.

Everytime I look at it. Though I have only broken the triple digit mark twice on any figure purchase once to Scott for my SS Supergirl (Got my SS Batgirl from him in the same deal) and the other my CSS Spidey from Len. Definately worth more than I've spent but I'm sure with the number of doubles, triples, etc. It's astronomical. I buy way too many lots and collections. Finally decided to thin the herd after the new year of the extras. Wanna start on some of the others needed and replace a couple of the repro accessories with originals, and want to finance from within. Gonna pop the extras out after the holidays. Should be postin in the Marketplace for weeks. Come to think of it don't think I wanna know what I've spent.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

I've been collecting for so long that it would really be impossible for me to say what I've spent. I try to keep records of what I buy and sell, but I had several computer crashes over the years and lost some of that data (yeah, I know...should have backed it up more often). I still have a lot of the information that I did back up and what I've bought and sold since the last crash, but there's a good bit of info that's missing. I know that THIS year, I've been doing a pretty good job of only buying with the money from what I sell. But since I paid for the stuff that I'm selling in previous years, that really only says that I'm staying about even right now (with my current finances, that's about the only way I can add anything to my collection right now). I can safely say, without a doubt, that I've got more than $5 in my collection.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

I asked my insurance agent about getting a rider on my homeowners
for my comics and toys. He told me that it would all have to be
appraised and documented by a third party.

I am mainly concerned about losing everything in a fire, not
theft. If anything was stolen, it would not be a stranger, and
the list of suspects is very, very short.

He recommended that I increase the value of the home contents
which covers furniture, electronics, etc. to cover the replacement
value. It only adds a little bit to the premium and I don't have to
produce any receipts or records to get paid.

so how many have their collections insured...

because I have to have insurance for my collectible business, I have always had my personal collection insured as well...

but, and this is a very true story that got me to thinking about fellow collectors, I have a good friend/long time customer (a fireman in NY) whose house recently caught on fire and he lost virtually all of his collectibles... 6 figures worth easy, but he didn't have proper insurance, and now is "out" virtually everything...

we never think it can happen to us, but it can, and most don't realize that collectibles are generally not covered under home policy's unless seperate riders are in place.....

I goto SDCC, or NY con, etc and often wonder, when I see folks with millions of $'s of collectibles in a 10 foot space, how "safe" are they...

just food for thought while I wait on UPS to deliver diamond comics today

I prefer not to think about it, however doc makes a good point. Insurance is very important for thinkg like this as mentioned in other threads, most home owners insurance does not cover things like toy collections.

We've been looking into collectibles insurance, because they don't require an itemized list or appraisal. The documentation is more like photos of your toys and at least an example of your comics, last time I checked.

I couldn't begin to guess, but it has to be a lot. I've been collecting since the late 80s.

I kept an Excel spreadsheet when I was heavy into buying packaged stuff. It's one of the more depressing documents I own.
