I went the same insurance path as Doc- I put it under the value of the contents of my entire home. Mainly, I have a very, very rough idea about the value of my packaged collection. I can put an even sketchier number on mu loose collection, but it is really hard to come up with. Its also kind of hard to justify that I've spent what i have over the years.

because I have to have insurance for my collectible business, I have always had my personal collection insured as well...

but, and this is a very true story that got me to thinking about fellow collectors, I have a good friend/long time customer (a fireman in NY) whose house recently caught on fire and he lost virtually all of his collectibles... 6 figures worth easy, but he didn't have proper insurance, and now is "out" virtually everything...

we never think it can happen to us, but it can, and most don't realize that collectibles are generally not covered under home policy's unless seperate riders are in place.....
      irony..

for my comics and toys. He told me that it would all have to be
appraised and documented by a third party.

I am mainly concerned about losing everything in a fire, not
theft. If anything was stolen, it would not be a stranger, and
the list of suspects is very, very short.

He recommended that I increase the value of the home contents
which covers furniture, electronics, etc. to cover the replacement
value. It only adds a little bit to the premium and I don't have to
produce any receipts or records to get paid.
I think that every insurance company/agent plays by their own set of rules. There are many different variations and factors as it pertains to insuring collectibles.

I myself personally at this point and time put it under the value of the contents of my entire home just like Wee did.

I also have my more rare pieces sealed away in a fire proof/water proof vault so I am not sweating it.

This is true. Dan has next to nothing if anything at all left. I bought some of it from him so I should know.
