    Anyone as a Kid Feel Weird About Female Megos?

    I remember when I was a kid, I always felt a bit weird getting the female Megos such as Wonder Woman and Batgirl. To my innocent way of thinking, if it was a guy it was an action figure, but if it was a girl, it was a doll. But of course, when I got the Fantastic Four, I had to have Invisible Girl....otherwise it was the Fantastic Three. So I gritted my tooth and got her. Guys, what were your feelings about the lady Megos?

    I bought my Batgirl (my only female figure..) from Kmart, and my stepdad took zero time in telling me it wasn't an action figure, it was truely A DOLL.

    ( Ah, she sure was.. )

    'Course this was the time Robin was getting cozy with Babs in the Batman Family comics, so.., it was, um.., weird.

    I believe I bought her near the end of my figure/comic collecting days back then (GA that Christmas was my last Mego..).

        I remember trying to buy a Daisy Duke from Circus World and my Dad was like, "What in the world do you want that for?" I never had any of the super-heroines as a wee lad though. In fact I don't remember even ever seeing them.

          That is sort of "still" the way I feel. I call the female ones dolls, whether that's right or wrong. Growing up I owned a Zira but had no interest in owning a mego who I wasn't comfortable having another mego punch them in the face. Today, I still little interest in the female dolls but certainly don't knock anyone who collects them. If Mattel comes out with some new girls, I'll likely buy them though.

            I never had any as a kid. I guess when I had money in hand I was always looking for someone other than the Super Gals and my parents a/k/a Santa Claus did the same. Now, however, I really enjoy the Super Gals and make an effort to try to acquire them when I can.

              I had Dorothy, The Wicked Witch, & Batgirl as a kid. Never felt odd about them--my mom & grandmother were pretty indulgent about Megoes.

              We often got them from catalogues, though, so I wasn't aware of a lot of them until I was grown.

                thats probably why there are so few female megoes to buy, because of people like us! who are afraid of buying "dolls" !!!

                  I wanted a Mego Batgirl and convinced my best friend to run an "errand" for me and pick her up for my 'niece'. Yep. I was pretty insecure about those things. H*ll I was a freshman in highschool in the fall of '79 so it became a high stakes mission to pick up any Mego by that point. I remember literally sweating while I walked down an isle in Children's Palace to see what Mego's they had on the shelf. Of all things I kept wanting to look at this 12 inch Cap I had never seen. I couldn't bring myself to get him, but I did pick up a few carded Hulks, a Spidey, and a Batman and Robin...they were "gifts" of course.
                  You have to realize I was a football player so, by that stage, it was very uncouth to be seen walking down a toy isle with "dolls" in your hands (I don't remember anyone describing them as action figures back then). Of course that was all insecurity on my part but it was so bad it was palpable. Now, all of these years later with a wife and three kids, I could care less. I'll push kids out of the way to get my stuff now...(;

                      Well I don't really recall ever wanting any of them. I had a Zira but didn't really think of her as a female, more as an ape. My sister had Catwoman and Dorothy. I stole her catwoman to make a Nova for my POTA guys. I guess Dorothy would've been better actually? LOL I also had a lot of 12" figures (GI Joe, SMDM) and my sister had Barbies and Barbie's townhouse so we'd always play together with those.
                      I remember being "too cool/too old" for toys too but I'd secretly still play with them in my room.

                          Uhura was the only one I had. Didn't really think much of it. Just thought of her as part of the crew.

                              I was sitting here thinking some more about this subject and it occurred to me I had a Jane West and did not feel uncomfortable about her. Same with Zira, and more recently, had a GI Jane from the GI Joe Classic Collection and didn't feel weird. And suddently it occurred to me: When it's a female, if it has lifelike hair, it seems like a doll, but if it's a female with plastic hair, it seems like an action figure.

                              Weird, huh?n
