Clearly, the new sculpt will never hold the same nostalgic value as our bright-eyed Man of Steel from the 70's, but I have to agree, the new head sculpt looks more like Superman.
I also like the belt update- not so much that it loses the Mego feel, but enough to actually improve the costume. I hope most of the changes fall into this category.WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.Comment

New Superman
Okay, let me try to answer everyone's questions:
Personally I would have used the original head, but there
had to be changes.
The new head is based on the old one - Andy Covalt, our sculptor,
used the original mego head as the base and changed the hair and
the eyes a little. The head IS too big because this is a prototype.
The rotocast version will be 6% smaller.
When MEGO made Superman, there was no licensing department
to oversee toys, now there is. Supes must have an S curl, not
just a curl. The eyes have to be blue and the chin more prominent.
And remember the original sculpt is Don - Dinahmite's boyfriend.
Things I like and dislike about the two Superman sculpts (old and new)
Old sculpt looks more like a real person .. The new sculpt is a bit cartoonie.
New sculpt looks more like Superman .. Old sculpt looks like any guy off the street.
Old sculpt looks better scaled to the body .. New sculpt looks a little big
New sculpt is classic/modern looking ... Old sculpt looks outdated today.
Both sculpts have their goods and not so goods - so they even eachother out

And one more thing - you can see it in the pictures, but there is
an all yellow insignia on the cape the same size as the chest
emblem.
You're welcome.Comment

can't see it - I thought Ben got a shot of the back of the cape.Comment

I'm sure there are others who would have rather have had straight repros, but overall, for the hobby, I think it's best that they went this route. It all still FEELS like Mego, but by changing sculpts, they eliminated some of the outdated features of the old-figures (sideburns), and stayed truer to DC's stringent style guides (white eyes, Superman's "S" curl). And most importantly to many folks here, the differences will make collecting the original figures easier (with less of a chance of folks getting hosed by sellers passing of figures and parts as vintage) and those who have invested large sums of money in nice collections will not see their collections become monetarily worthless over night.fellas, I don't know whats wrong w/me but I'm not feeling these guys yet, I would have luved it if they ran w/the old heads, am I crazy or does anyone else feel this way??? Once again, I am reminded that I am just not as cool as Doc, though I hope to be one day. It's kinda like the scene in "Wanted" where Wesley returns home to his ex-girlfriend and former best friend - "Uhhh... He's the man!"
An old Irish Blessing - "May those who love us, love us; and if they do not love us, may God turn their hearts; and if He does not turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles, that we may know them by their limping"Comment
