I have no interest in resale...I don't collect Megos to sell them. I guess My main question was...would you repaint the Hair, as that is a permanent Part of the Figure. The Bodysuit & Boots, etc.. are accessories and can be changed at anytime.
I can see the point of not restoring a "rare" Figure(such as the Romulan)...one might as well just buy a Repro Head.
If I knew what type of paint to use I would retouch the rubs on my Megos. I don't see why that would be a problem. If it was undetectable from original then what's the harm? If it was slightly off-color then at least it looks better than a pink spot. When you go so far as to totally repaint the head then that's a little different. That's more than restoring to me. But I guess it depends how bad it was to begin with. If it needed a total repaint then it should be considered along the same lines as when comics are repaired/restored: Better than the starting condition but not worth what an unrestored original would be worth.
I guess it all boils down to what the next owner ends up with. If they think they are getting all original and end up with a re-do they'd probably be angry. I know I would. As long as resto is stated and it's a nice resto job then I guess do what makes you happy.

I wouldn't Do any kind of Restoring whether it is Rare or Common. I know my Ability and I'm not that good at trying to customize or repair. I would just make it worse by trying to fix it. I actually prefer them all original so I would have to pass

The Paint to use is Acrylic...and I've had pretty good success touching up(and matching the Color)of some common Megos. But would of course, never sell them as originals without telling the new Owner.
If it is for you do what ever makes you happy but if you want to resell it might end up as a problem. I on the other hand restore all my Megos but do my best to keep original parts.
I love to restore figures, and though I generally don't sell them I did restore a Six million Dollar Man figure that was pretty beat. I picked him up for $5 at a flea market, cleaned him, touched up the paint on his hair, put him in a custom suit and sold him for $40, but I listed it as a custom, in reconditioned condition and listed everything I had done to the figure as well. I love taking a trashed figure and turning it into something that looks good for display.
For me, it would boil down to my intentions of what I wanted to do with the figure. If I wanted to set it on my shelf and admire it, I would restore it no matter what the figure was. If I intended to sell, I would evaluate whether the figure was worth more untouched and go from there. I think Type 1 Kirk is right in that aspect.
Well, most of you know how I stand on this. I play w/ my toys, so a "repro" isn't any less fun than an original. If it needs to be fixed, fix it! Paint it, get it a new outfit, new gear. If there are repro parts to make your original look good, then use them! Doc Mego, CTVT, Castaway, and whoever else got into this to extend the hobby and make it more enjoyable, so why not avail ourselves to all their hard work? I'm a person who truly loves her toys. I'm not a museum curator, and I'm not investing tons of money for showpieces. I want my stuff to look good, and even though their inanimate, I think my toys would truly be happier that someone took the time to care for them.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
Not only have I restored old figures, but I've custom'd up old figures as well. I'm looking for the best representation of a character, while still being playable. So Conan got a new torso, Cap America got his suit tailored up. Supergirl got all new duds. The Trek guys got repro phasers painted black and chrome....
As usual, I'm late to the party . . . . . but Restoring figures is how I built my collection. My Batgirl is from 5 different ebay auctions . . . piecing them together is quite fun. Sewing an unraveled seam or a touched up eyebrow man that brings back some memories and it's how I originally got into customizing as well. Great Thread!!

Last year i brought an AQUALAD off e-bay and he was trashed i paid $12 inc shiping someone took a black marker and drew a beard on him and his outfit was cut up to make it appears as ripes, I removed the marker but so far had no luck in finding an original outfit so i'll most likely have a custom outfit made for him and get a pair of doc megos gloves for him yeah he won't be a true original MEGO but he'll look good on display. So buy the trashed Romulan and buy a few doc mego repo parts and have a nice display figure but don't repaint the hair just put a repo helmet on him and you won't see the hair rubs
