If you love your mego's please read this.

Hello to the community. I introduced myself a few weeks ago and told some about a fire i had in Sept of 2007. I told some of you i would explain further.

So in September of 2007 i was called by my neighbor telling me there was a huge fire at our apartment complex. I was part of 4 apartments, 2 on each floor. By the time i got home the place was almost out but had burned to the ground. It was a lit cigg in the next apt that caught some paint on fire and it went quick from there. I was already partly moved into my fiancee's house and had most of my apparel and electronic stuff with her. All of my collectibles were still at my apt. Everything i had collected since i was a wee little collector was burned, melted, or flat out obliterated with no signs of it. I lost every Luke Skywalker, every Cobra soldier, every baseball, hockey, football, and basketball card. Well you guys get the point. I know there are several big time collectors out there. I had a lot of stuff. Lots of mint in the package stuff and just as much opened stuff. Hey i was an equal opportunity collector, i had to free several figures from the evil clamshell. Like i said i had been collecting for almost 30 years at this point of my life.

Ok this is the real important part of my message. Of all the stuff i had i never had insurance on any of it. Worst of all, i still don't know how much i lost cause i never wrote it down and took pictures to document it. Just imagine tomorrow everything you had was not just gone but destroyed. As you can tell this is still a very hard part of my life. Thank god i had my fiancee through everything and we are still getting married this April.
So for all you super collectors out there, trust me you will never remember everything you have right now. Take pictures of everything and write it down so even someone not knowing anything about toys can understand it. I can't even put into words just how bad the last year was. But i have my health, my upcoming marriage and the next part of my life to build my collection again. If anyone wants to donate that spare mego or hansolo you can spare. Anyway be safe this new year and my name is mark and i am a megoholic.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but you're right, at least you and your lady are good and no-one got burnt up. That would be a hell of a lot worse.

That is helpful information. There are several members on here that have lost portions of their collection due to various disasters. Sadly, you all could probably start your own mego therapy thread. I would be interested to know about others insurance experiences or advice as well. So no renters insurance?? or they didn't believe you about the stuff you had and it's value?? Again sorry for your losses... but it is just stuff, and you can get it back, at least to some capacity.

Mego therapy thread..now that's funny stuff. And no insurance at all. But if i did have it i would still have to have proof of possession. I also forgot to mention the smell of all that melted plastic

Sorry to hear that your collection was lost! That hurts!

But at least you and your finance are safe!

I keep meaning to take pictures of my collection, but never seems to get around to it.... I will put this on my to-do 2009 list.

FYI, it's not safe to assume that renter's insurance will cover your comics or toys. Most of the policies I've looked into do not. There are several companies that offer separate collectibles insurance, and you generally don't need to document everything. Usually you just provide pictures and purchase a policy for a specific amount. There are always reps from these companies at Toy Shows and Comicons. I have a brochure from one, but don't know where it is at the moment. Just had to mention that.

So sorry to hear this. I send my best to you. I had a similar experience a few weeks back but I was blessed. I was dozing off on my couch when I awoke to hear a lot of commotion in the hall (I live on a third floor). Then silence, then more commotion about two minutes later. I heard someone pounding on a door yelling something downstairs. Then more scrambling footsteps up the stairs. Then pounding next door, where I could make out someone yelling "GET OUT! FIRE!". Then they pounded on my door and yelled the same. I jumped up and IMMEDIATELY thought of my Megoas as I was home alone.
I opened my door and there was so much smoke I felt like I was in a movie, very surreal.
This smoke was so thick I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. I held my breath, closed my eyes and ran down the stairs guided only by memory and habit.
Outside I saw the intense smoke bellowing out the complex's door. I looked up at my window and there was a small amount of smoke coming out my windows. I was horrified as the fire trucks weren't here yet. Apparently the girl on the first floor was making french fries with hot oil on the stove. She threw the fries in too quick, started a grease fire and caught her kitchen cabinets on fire. Luckily and with a blessing from God no one was hurt or injured in any way. The apartment was deemed inhabitable and a big sign was hung on the door.
Needless to say I had the life scared out of me and I really thought about what people have told me for years "You have to insure that room!" or "Have you insured that yet?!". My procrastination has come to end as that scare was close enough. I made an appointment with my insurance agent to purchase renter's insurance.
I am very glad to hear that you have such great, positive things to focus on Mark. I'll see if I can't conjure up a Mego for you to start you off again. Best of luck in your marriage in a couple months!

Yeah like del said above, Most insurance at least needs to see pictures. It's that proof of possession thing. If i can save just one person the pain of never being able to look at that mint carded Darth Vader with double retractable saber again. I have come to grips that unless i win the lottery i will never have even close to the number of carded vintage figures i had. Sure i'll be able to put together loose collections that might only cost a kidney or lung.
jwyblejr- i wish i had done that. It's easy to keep track now huh, as soon as you get something new you just write it down.

That must have been so devastating for you...groan. I, for one, need to take your advice that's for sure.

Not so long ago I was thinking about this kind of situations, so I've been taking pictures of my most valuable stuff and opened a blog to document what I have and share the pics with people that like the same stuff.

I am an insurance adjuster and can tell you, you need to have extra insurance on this stuff. Not only that but you should have photos stored someplace other than your house (safe deposit box) because if the collection burns up your photos will too.
Insurnace policies cover contents for specified perils only.....there are limitations on collections that go with these. I am sure every company has some variation of extra coverage you can purchase so it is worth looking into.
that being said, i do not have the extra either.

That is why I love my website.
I have photos of most of my collections on there.
                            Group shots, and individual photos.
I also keep spreadsheets for each collection, and have back-ups of those stored on my website also,
Every month I upload new versions of the spreadsheets, as well as back them up on another hard-drive. And I burn them to disc every 3 or 4 months.
Took me a long time to pull all that info together into a usable and manageble form, I'm not letting it go poof without a fight.
