Mego of the Day for Wednesday is the Mego Galen Figure produced by Cipsa of Mexico, this version is famous for having boots but no pants. It's a very liberal planet, this Planet of the Apes.....
Cispas and Ledy's were something I was totally unaware of until I found the Museum. Being an apes fan I eventually had to collect the Cispas. Since I have a have a facination with Mego Corny/Galen, this one is especially cool to me. Part of me hates they have no pants, and part of me thinks that's the coolest thing about these. Pantless apes, what could be more fun than that?
I only became aware of these when I joined the museum. I find it totally weird that the way they chose to differentiate the cispa apes, was to take away their pants. But that aside, the apes are my favorite line, so maybe someday I'll try to get these.
The mego Cornelius is my all time favorite. Of the cispas, I am most intrigued by Bill, since he is somewhat unique to this line and Urko (the helmeted ape). I think they made his shirt orange, because it was that color in the animated show, which I just started watching. So they feel a fresher to me than the others, which I kind of feel like I have already, but with bonus pants : )
Arrrggghhh. Sooner or later it had to happen - A stark reminder of the Cipsas I sold. Still, I enjoyed collecting them, and like Dave, never knew they existed until I came here. The Cipsa Galen was the last one needed to complete the set but patience rewarded me in the end.
It is clear in the picture too that the rubber used for the Cipsa heads is slightly different. It has a more `paisty` look, and appears less `solid` . It's a bit hard to explain until you see them next to a regular Mego.
"I should say I`m very much cleverer than any of the people who put me here. As a matter of fact, I could leave any time I wanted. It`s only a doll`s house after all. Anyway, I don`t mind. I like dolls" - The Mad Hatter, Arkham Asylum.
Great figure,
I love the shiney green tunic and no hyro's on the dickie.
This brings me to a question about Cispas and Ledi's....
Why were they made in Mexico rather than Honk Kong ?
Didn't all of Mego's associate companies/distributor's have everything made in Hong Kong --- Palitoy, Grand Toys, Pin-Pin, Harbert etc ?
Why did Mexican companies make their own figures in Mexico ?
Was it a law or something ?
Wow, I knew about Lili Ledy, but not Cipsa before MM. I like those boots on them. But why no pants? Hmmm...do they have the blue undies like the Trek guys? I personally wouldn't wanna ride a horse w/ no pants!

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
I first found out about these in toyshop, Mike King had made a discovery of Mexican toys and had a two page spread. I actually bought his photos from him for my "Upcoming Mego book" which thankfully, never happened.
I used to read toyshop in a book store on campus during my breaks, I lost my marbles when I saw this ad but couldn't afford to buy the magazine, let alone the figures.

I TOTALLY LOVE IT..! Man, he could have been one of the Trek Aliens, a relative to the Mugato. TOTALLY LOVE the green. I may have to acquire him, very Mego indeed.
Mexican POTA, you say..? His burrito farts must be legendary...
Like most I learned of these and Ledys from the museum. This is a line I'd like to pursue. I've always liked them, I just haven't actively gone after them. Gotta love Galen.

That is exactly why. Many Central and South American countries have laws that dictate production of many products happen within the country. Its a way to ensure jobs and money domestically. Its also an easier law to get passed when doing so will not raise the prices of the products.
I think of them as being in the time-honored tradition of anthropomorphized animal characters like Donald Duck and Porky Pig who dare to wear shirts...and no pants.
yeah, fisher price had the same problem and had to have plastimarx make their stuff in mexico. it is also kinda same kinda different, and the differences are fantastic!
with this cipsa galen, i just kinda stare in disbelief.....i keep looking for his pants
