What would make sense to me, for Mad Max IV, is to let him come full circle.
He was a cop, lost it all, became a drifter, regained his humanity by caring for the feral kids. Same for the world he lives in. Part I had some remnants of law and order, II was total chaos, III had Barter Town and some civilisation.
What I want to see in IV?
The return of Law, with a new police team. Max being reluctant, and saying NO to becoming a cop again. But the need to do good is still deep down inside him.
Some kind of event that will set him in motion again, to become the new leader of this Police Team (so geriatric Max doesn't have to do big stunts).
And if possible, the discovery, deep down some forgotten garage, of the true last of the V8 Interceptors. Part IV would end with that iconic car, roaming the streets once again, hunting down the lawless...
