What would make sense to me, for Mad Max IV, is to let him come full circle.
He was a cop, lost it all, became a drifter, regained his humanity by caring for the feral kids. Same for the world he lives in. Part I had some remnants of law and order, II was total chaos, III had Barter Town and some civilisation.
What I want to see in IV?
The return of Law, with a new police team. Max being reluctant, and saying NO to becoming a cop again. But the need to do good is still deep down inside him.
Some kind of event that will set him in motion again, to become the new leader of this Police Team (so geriatric Max doesn't have to do big stunts).
And if possible, the discovery, deep down some forgotten garage, of the true last of the V8 Interceptors. Part IV would end with that iconic car, roaming the streets once again, hunting down the lawless...

So, the Max is cast... It's some guy named Tom Hardy. I know absolutely nothing about this cat so I will reserve judgement. However, I do kinda wonder why so many obvious good choices, i.e. Eric Bana, Gerard Butler, were overlooked. It seems to me that a lot of these modern reboots or requels or whatever are now purposely seeking out an unknown whereas in the olden days it was thought to be good insurance to get a name actor for a big budget picture. I am also hesitant to judge this practice as completely negative, as sometimes the anonymous players are the right people. I didn't know who Hugh Jackman was before X-Men, or the new Kirk before Star Trek. Thoughts?

It was the one where they killed Mel's wife and kid -- and he got them back

It was like Death-Wish on Steroids

                  Good movie
The first one is indeed Mad Max. That's the one you described.
The second is called The Road Warrior (I believe Mad Max 2 everywhere else). That's actually the first one I saw and I have always loved that movie.
The third is called Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. That's the only one of the three I saw in the theater.
They are all good movies and I own them all on DVD.
I'd love to see Mel do a Mad Max IV and I like Rik's plot, too.
Unfortunately I think it will end up never getting done and eventually he will get too old to play Max just like Eastwood never played the role he was born to play: Jonah Hex!!!

I would love to see Mel reprise the role for a new movie.
That not looking likely I have no problem with them recasting it.As for using an unknown again not a real problem with this film as in the first movie Mel was a relative unknown at least in north America. So it has potential if casted properly.

they already are going to do a mad max 4 (or another mad max) but not with Gibson.

yup starts filming this September or early next year in Australia .George Miller is extra busy planning the stunt scenes he said in an interview NO CGI. the film takes place after Mad Max 1 and Before Road Warrior not after Beyond Thunderdome like most people think.so for that reason Mel wont be back you need another actor that its in his 20's I think its been cast already but I was hoping Sam Worthington would play the role.I cant wait for it their's a whole story their after the total breakdown of Society and the killing of Max's Family after the first one .if Mel does decide to be part of it Im thinking it should be in the very beginning as he tells his adventures and then they do flashback as a young Max Rockanstansky?

Finally, I heard this news about Mad Max 4: Fury Road

I don't mind George Miller hired a young man as "Max" in that new movie 'cause original Mel Gibson got older, he seems don't wanted to work for Mad Max 4 in the future.

I'm thinking a reboot is more likely than Gibson returning to this franchise.
