Star Trek TNG -- Older Season's vs. Newer Season's
Well, I LOVE TNG! And I'm SO glad the Sci-Fi channel started running them again. Aesthetically speaking, I like the first season: jumpsuit uniforms, reclining ops chairs, darker paneling on the bridge, a strong female figure (Tasha). I did NOT like Troi's first season tweed, however. I've always liked Data, though. And I'm probably the only person who didn't hate Wesley, except when he acted like a jerk in his final appearance. But I enjoy the broad range of stories, showcasing the main characters. And maybe it's b/c I'm a woman, but I enjoy the drama between Troi & Riker and Picard & Beverley. The series told good stories, and while some eps had backstories, they were not all contigient on a single plot (i.e. DS9's Dominion, Enterprise's Xindi), which got old after awhile. (at least Voyager stopped doing this w/ the Kazon). The later eps weren't always as interesting, but overall, it's a great series.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
What always bothered me about TNG in the early years, was their ignorance of the TOS. (Later when there were movie sales at stake, every one in the 24th century knew who Kirk was). But early on they were like "I think this happened once before to the original enterprise..."
Kirk only saved the Earth a dozen times. You think it might have been on a test at the academy once or twice
It doesn't seem to be the consensus here but
thee show's quality trend seemed to parallel SEINFELD's
meaning I thought it was a decent show that was almost perfect
by the end of the run---- as far as I'm concerned.
No offense to THE ORIGINAL SERIES fans---but TOS was too dry for my tastes
---I though TNG had a nice abundance of well written humor and that's what
drew me in really
DATA's unique character of being "almost human" as well as WORF'S unique
character of being crazy Klingon that was also trying to fit in with the "humans"
was a great part of the show
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
What the biggest problems with ALL the Star Trek spin-off's(TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise) they had too many on going threads of Plotlines.
Where ST:TOS....had self contained Stories, that wrapped up at the end of the Show. Plus...TOS had different Writers once and a while to shake things up, and keep it fresh. TNG....all the Stories were written by Berman & Bragna...it it just bacame a meal Ticket to Them...just a Day Job. Churning out Episodes...with No inspiration!
Deep Space 9 was grittier, dirtier, more violent, more kickass.
While I do like TNG, I've always preferred DS9. By the last season DS9 kinda lost its way and spent too much time rehashing Babylon 5's plot ideas, but the early seasons were terrific.

I loved TNG when it aired. The first few seasons have painfully awkward stories. Wesley saving the ship, Picard hiding in the holodeck from Troi's mom, an obnoxious guy from the past is unfrozen and helps Picard figure out the Romulans deception. Ugh.
But the middle years were really strong. Season three the show found its groove, I think. Yesterday's Enterprise was totally brilliant. By then most of my friends had given up on TNG. So I taped Yesterdays Enterprise and made them watch it and they all came back to the show.
Towards the end, some shows revolving around Worf and Troi's relationship and Worf's son started to bug me. Why not just have her get together with Riker, like we all want?!? But it stayed solid.

Y'know... that's why I DIDN'T like it. Almost every sci-fi series does the space war, wild west frontier thing. I did like the season where O'Brien's wife was back on earth and him and the doc were hanging out. 'Cos you NEVER see the sort of everyday stuff the crew does on a sci-fi show. Unless it's plot related (instead of BEING the plot) or is meant to demonstrate the irreverence of the cocky young guy character.
>Kirk only saved the Earth a dozen times
'Course that was almost a hundred years ago. You'd think someone else might have done something heroic in that time. ON a ship NOT named "Enterprise."
