Star Trek TNG -- Older Season's vs. Newer Season's

Star Trek TNG -- Older Season's vs. Newer Season's

Been watching some older season's of Next Gen lately ......

In the older season's I like the way the crew isn't so chummy ...
    Seems more realistic .........
Yes, we all hate Wesley -- but besides that ... I think the first few seasons are closer to the original series than the later.

To me, Next Gen suffered the same fate as MASH in it's later years.

When Roddenberry died, it got soft.

    What do you think ?

Technobabble ruled the later seasons making them incredibly hard for me to watch these days....the whole episode resolved in the last 5 mins mainly due to some engineering technobabble from data or geordie really used to pee me off...for that reason I prefer the earlier stories

I love and still love TNG but think of the first couple of seasons as annoyingly PC.

I think the entire series is very PC ... almost to a point of being sickeningly sweet

        I was just watching Data/Lore tonight ........

It dawned on me, Picard is very heavy handed (which is realistic) .......
Riker still kisses Picard's behind --- (which is realistic) .......
Bev get's a little mad at Picard (which is realistic) .......
        Geordie isn't a super-brain know-it-all ...

It just seems like this forumula has been lost in the newer stories.

Meaning the new stories are mostly YES PICARD IS RIGHT-- HE'S ALWAYS RIGHT ...
We're just one big happy family

You know, from the start, I thought TNG was way too stuffy for my liking, but assumed it would grow on me....It never did. I still watch TOS (live action and animated), but I cant even be bothered to watch any of the other series anymore.

Season wise, you can definately notice the old school Trek guys were running the show in the first season. Dull as it was, it did have the same kind of "feel" to the production as TOS. Season 2, things changed as an obvious attempt was made to "perk" up the series. these changes became more prevelant throughout the series, especially as more and more of the "old timers" slipped away. Roddenberry himself really had little to do (hands on) with the show after season 1.
I read recently that his health issues became quite an issue during the production of the first season, and that added to his notorious penchant for rewriting everything and taking credit for almost everything, had a lot to do with the huge migration of staff during (and immediately following) the first season. Thats when Paramount asked (politely?), Gene to step aside and Berman really started running things.....leading to Trek's current state of woes!

Wesley always saving the ship was horrible --- and happened way to often (I totally agree)

But, if the Wesley factor is removed .... I just think the first few seasons seemed more fresh and interesting then the laters.

                  Early stuff examples ......

                  Yar dies ....... ?
Will Picard become a Borg and leave the series ?
Wow, they literally just showed a phaser blowing a dudes head off !!!
                  Etc .......

                  Later stuff examples

Troi and Worf might love eachother --- ho-hum
Picard wishes he'd be invited to Riker's card games
Data turns bad every 3 weeks
Geordi is in love with Data
Riker's main goal in life is to pull down his shirt and hope nobody notices.

The first shows all suffered from "we have to explain our roles" Syndrome.

Hi I'm Worf and I'm a Klingon hot head. I once jumped over the bridge railing and pulled a Phaser on the bad guy while he was on the view screen. Guess nobody explained how that TV thing worked?

Hi I'm Laforge and I'm blind See I drive the ship.... and I'm blind get it.

Then there was Trois unprofessional bunny suit. As much as I like a Hot body I loved it when Capt Jericho (?) dressed her down (Yeah I ment yelled at her.... get your minds out of the gutter) for dressing like a tramp. She's an officer for gods sake.

"So Mr Barkley tell me what your feeling" As my ample breast practically jump from my skin tight body suit. Yeah thats a professional shrink

                      Hmmmm....

I never really liked TNG; everyone was so well adjusted, and upright, and honest that I just wanted to smack the whole bunch of em! But there were a few bright spots near the end. That ultimately went NOWHERE....

-Ro was cool, mostly 'cos she was DIFFERENT! You think the hyper-conservative Klingon guy might have fulfilled this role but he was just as uptight as the rest of 'em.

-I liked the episode where Troiu ended up in charge; although when Ro complained that trying to rescue the aft section put EVERYONE at risk she was RIGHT. I woulda liked to see more debate over that... but the idea that Troi liked being in command and actively sought a comission afterwards was great! FINALLY someone who wasn't perfect! Someone with a goal to work towards! Someone, you know.... DOING something!

                      >The first shows all suffered from "we have to explain our roles" Syndrome.

I agree; but I think they HAD to 'cos they did such a poor job DEMONSTRATING who everyone was.

"I'm a Klingon; but I follow the rules unquestioningly AND I get my butt handed to me at least once an episode."

"I am an android who wishes to be human, even though I display more human traits than the HUMAN parts of the crew."

                      *sigh*

Yup...You took the word's right out of My Mouth! The later Episodes...were spotty writing at best...but there were some good one's though(Yesterday's Enterprise, Tapestry, Reunification, etc...).

I have no stomach for the spin offs, ithey're just so....snotty and safe. Everybody walking around these carpeted halls drinking their non alcoholic booze solving all their problems by pressing buttons. Whatever the entire world saw in those shows I just couldn't see for the life of me.

There are a couple of inspired episodes granted but I flick away when I see any of those spandex outfits.

There are some really Good Episodes...but I wouldn't want to have to buy any Box Sets to get the few that I want. I'd like to somehow make a Collection of My favorites(it would be a fairly small Collection).
