Here's 29 films by 26 filmmakers, released between '99 and '09, that I very much wish that people felt like talking about instead of the Trilogy of Terror:

    1999:
    eXistenZ - David Cronenberg
    Galaxy Quest - Dean Parisot
The Iron Giant - Brad Bird
    The Matrix - The Wachowskis

    2002:
    Minority Report - Steven Spielberg
    Solaris - Steven Soderbergh

    2003:
    Code 46 - Michael Winterbottom

    2004:
    Dead Leaves - Hiroyuki Imaishi
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Michel Gondry
    Night Watch - Timur Bekmambetov

    2005:
    Steamboy - Katsuhiro Otomo
War of the Worlds - Steven Spielberg
The Wild Blue Yonder - Werner Herzog

    2006:
A Scanner Darkly - Richard Linklater
Children of Men - Alfonso Cuarón
    Day Watch - Timur Bekmambetov
    The Host - Bong Joon-ho
    Idiocracy - Mike Judge
    Paprika - Satoshi Kon
V for Vendetta - James McTeigue

    2007:

    Timecrimes - Nacho Vigalondo

    2008:
    Cloverfield - Matt Reeves

    2009:
    District 9 - Neill Blomkamp
    Moon - Duncan Jones

Wiki designated the lot of them SF. If'n you're bored, give 'em a watch!

    Okay. Carry on.
I have watched many of those movies.

The ones that I like best in that batch are:

    V for Vendetta
    The Matrix
    The Mist
    Galaxy Quest
    A Scanner Darkly

And, I think Watchmen came out in 2009 too. It's pretty much science-fiction -alternate world/alt-history fiction. I find it to be one of the best movies of that decade.

I don't hate them, but Anakin should have been Lancelot and instead he was Mordred. I was rooting for Obi-Wan the whole time.

Star Wars fans who will gobble up anything with lightsabers, John Williams score and an opening crawl (throw in a Yoda here or there as icing on the cake).

Let's see reasons why a film of the quality of Independence Day struck so hard, and so deep as if it was New Hope itself for five hundred, Alex!

Hmm. I would have thought other sci for films concurrent with the prequels would have been better. Now reading the list you gave - I see only one I liked (Matrix), Serenity was decent, but really just a made TV movie.

    Star Trek nemesis
    Men in black II

the biggest problem was Lucas let his ego take over and he had to control all aspects of production. he should have just written the story and then produced but let others write the screen play and direct

The originals (specifically the first movie) was made to be just a generic fun "space movie" for everyone that walked in the theatre.

The prequels may not be the best Star Wars movies, but I think they are better than most other Sci-Fi movies that came out around the same time. Star Wars expectations are hard to live up to. I like them well enough, but they do have flaws that are not easy to overlook.

I watched a video interview on youtube, and George Lucas said Star Wars is about father & son and dysfunctional family. He said that it's a space opera, but it really is a soap opera.

So I guess, Intergalactic Civil War and Trade Agreements are just built around that focus, as the background and setting. The heart of the story is family.

I guess the spaceships, planets and creatures work well because the audience becomes emotionally involved with the main characters.
