Having a woman Doctor ruins what happily worked for 50 years.

They should have made a new spin off and tried it out (The Adventures of Romana) so they don't damage a legend on a whim of a few people that decide

A certain subset will hate it because it is not Colin Baker... or David Tennant... or whoever they consider the One True Doctor...

A certain subset will pretend its great no matter what, just because it is this landmark moment in casting diversity...

I think the remainder of us can only have mixed feelings. The Doctor is a character that can change wildly from one regeneration to the next. Old vs. young, sunglasses vs. a fez, etc. That "almost everything changes, but something about the Doctor stays the same" is part of the fun of the show. If they pull that off here, it could add some freshness to the show's formula. But *can they* pull it off? Beats me.. We can only wait and see.

I agree that 12 would have been a better time to do it. It would have been a better fit both from a narrative and social perspective. But I am guessing they had the 50th special and they knew they would already get plenty of publicity and eyeballs. So they chose to play it safe.

Regardless of how people feel about her as the Doctor, this is certainly going to generate a ton of publicity for the show.

I look at that photo of McCoy and expect it to be part of a Plaid Stallions article.

As a total outsider, it's weird not that they went with a woman, but they're mortified of casting someone who isn't a stiff Brit. Adds a subtext to all of it.

Hate it,never heard of her just doesn't seem right and no not because it's a woman but because the master is/was a woman.

I think they have been building towards this for a good while. they introduced the idea with the Master coming back as a woman first, then they switch the Doctor as well. I just hope it is not a PC gimmick

Why yes, yes he is. That's a long ways from Radegast. Thanks for sharing.

I'm actually very interested in seeing this happen. Not familar with the actress, but that's an advantage, no pre-conceptions. Been a Who fan since #4 ran on PBS, but I'm not against this in any way. I think it will all depend on how they handle the stories...will they give the new Doctor a handsome young male companion now? Will they make a big show of people not listening to the woman Doctor as opposed to when he was a man and just kind of took charge of things?
If they just proceed on, business as usual, with little fanfare given to the change of sex, it'll work. If it becomes a constant "battle of the sexes" story, I think it'll fall apart pretty quick and become boring.
Also a lot rides on how the new Doctor is portrayed. Personally, I'd prefer to see her as a more Peter Davison-ish style Doctor. God save them if she's "Mary Poppins".
Maybe the 1st Doctor appearing in the regeneration episode will give this "legitimacy" in the eyes of some fans who may be on the fence about this. Who knows, we might get Susan back as companion. I'd certainly love to see the new Doctor interact with an old companion or two, in particular Jaime, Rose, or Martha.
