Planet of the Apes = Deep Philosophy, Man!

I watched it on DVD yesterday and got tears in my eyes in a few scenes. Am I going crazy? I've never had an emotional reaction to this movie; I always just thought it was a cool sci-fi/adventure film with some interesting philisophical points about the human species. But yesterday for some reason it seemed much deeper, much more allegorical, as though Taylor was the best and worst humanity had to offer -- best because of his indomitable spirit, his cleverness and resourcefulness; worst because he truly was a "born killer" -- and that the Apes' insight into our violent nature might truly fortell our doom.

Will we ever be able to lay down our weapons and live peacefully with one another, as the Apes appear to have done? Or will that peace come with the subjection of other animals, and at the expense of scientific truth? Do science and religion contradict each other? Do we need Sacred Scrolls to tell us how to live? (I know: no religion or politics, but I thought I'd raise these questions anyway as rhetorical.) The film is certainly bleak and cynical in its outlook.

Also, a techincal question: Why do the astronauts say early in the film that there's "no moon"? WTH?? Did the moon blow up with the nukes that destroyeed civilization? Weird.

I can't say enough about the Planet of the Apes movie, the 1968 version. It is such a classic. The costumes rocked. The cinematography was incredible. The acting superb. The cast was stellar.

It needed that Rod Serling touch...it tried and failed.

It also needed a Jerry Goldsmith type soundtrack...it tried and failed.

And it also need a hero that you actually cared about...

              So sad...It could've been great

The new movie..? Saw bits of it, too trendy.. The original 1968 movie, the first sequel, and the '74 television series, now those were the best of the lot. Just wrote a great review about the television series DVD set. Surprisingly entertaining, thanks much to Roddy and Mark Leonard.

I'd guess your saner than most. The movie gives you so much to think about.

It will always rank as the greatest movie ever for me.

I loathe the Burton remake the way Zira loathes bananas! This thread is about the 1968 film, and anyone who brings up the 2000 version again will be forcibly placed into a space capsule and rocketed to the year 3078!!!!!

That would throw the apes for a loop, if you showed up at Ape City with some Mego Ape action figures! "Dr. Zaius... would an ape make an ape doll... with a human body??" *flings Dr. Zaius figure into Dr. Zaius' hands*

The only things Burton's version had going for it was the special effects & the score/soundtrack had good elements.
It's a shame that that version is what will come to mind when someone of the younger generation hears or thinks of POTA........unless they are properly educated
