Since the companions are the perspective characters in the new show, have the current companion and the current Doctor get separated in the story. The companion is on the run, trying to get back to the TARDIS, makes a turn and finds the TARDIS unexpectedly. But, being chased, it's a welcome surprise. The companion ducks into it, shouting for the Doctor . . .

. . . but the inside is different, And at the controls is McGann.

Then you can spin the stories into that companion and McGann for as long as you like -- one episode, one season -- and then wrap it up by dropping the companion back off at the same point they met, to go back to the current Doctor.

With a plot device like the TARDIS, all sorts of crossovers like this are do-able.

I like that too - plenty of reasons it *can* be done without harming the integrity of the show.

the ideas of short runs and one off stories are great. Actually having the Doctor choose to regenerate as one of his former selves sort of blows up the regeneration part of the story.

That's a great idea. You can just say "this episode happened during the Pertwee era" and be done with it. No need for any further explanation.

Lots of great ideas here. I do love the idea of a "Tales of The Doctor" type series, though...which it sounds kind of like they're doing with the Star Trek series next year.

Imagine adventures with different Doctors each week...who knows what the timeline will be next time? It would be a lot like trying to watch the show on PBS in the 80s!

Capaldi just said he's coming back for Season 11. That hopefully will take care of those rumors for awhile.

The wait for the new season is insufferably long.
New companion "Bill" seems to have a personality similar in many respects to that of Rose.

Me too....but can we please have less stories like "Kill The Moon" (which IMHO was pure fantasy with very little science).

It was way too much to ask for the audience to buy...and with some of the conventions of Who, that's saying A LOT.

I thought it started strong and I liked the idea of the Doctor taking a walk while humanity made it's decision but the "Moon egg monster" was a poor foundation to pour these good concepts onto.

They should never do stories that effect the current world as a whole because it draws them into a parallel universe concept.

Supernatural did the same thing ... It was scary in season one because we thought it was happening here --- then it deviated so much away from current events it had to admit it was set in a parallel universe.

In the Doctor Who universe Earth has made "first contact" more times than I can count

I think Doctor Who's continuity is a mess anyway and besides that episode took place in the future.
