Would be interesting, but a teamup of Doctors is more likely. And I think when Capaldi leaves we will see a big push for either a female or an ethnic Doctor.
Can't say at this point whether I care or not. Capaldi & Clara have killed most of my interest in the new shows, and I'm kinda getting tired of seeing Tennant & Smith all over merchandising.
If anything I'd like to see Paul McGann get a proper turn at being the Doctor on TV. Maybe a season of flashback stories set prior to the Time War. A great opportunity wasted a few years ago when instead McGann we got the War Doctor inserted. It's as if it's tradition now to NOT involve #8 officially.

.
Perhaps not, most of the "progressive" stuff introduced into the series was done by Moffat.
From what I understand about the popularity of the show since Capaldi took over it's very possible Moffat's successor might be given orders not to pursue the course Moffat set it on.
I have no prob with a female Doctor (this was talked about as early as the 80's) ... as a matter of fact I kinda like the Missy Master
I would just like to see the stories themselves go back to being hardcore mysteries rather than fantasy-sci fi outings
edited to add .....
Ever notice Doctor Who is (used to be) Columbo in Space ?
In several interviews on British TV, Smith described his leaving as exact the opposite: he wanted to stay, Moffat wanted "a change".
Anyway, it's a rumor, and not a good idea, IMO. I liked Smith a lot, but let's move forward. Now that London mayor Boris Johnson is avalaible, he'd make a great new Doctor...

Why does every character, show or movie have to be a tool for social engineering these days? Black Bond, female Who, lesbian Tarzan... how about if they want any of these they invent new characters instead of subverting the originals.
Want a female time traveller? Spin off Missy into her own show.
Not interested in this if they're on about having him actually regenerate back into Smith... But some flashback stories featuring Smith's Doctor might be cool... and then why stop there? Film some McGann flashback episodes too!
Since the concept of continuity in this show is so different, why are regenerations necessary when jumping from doctor to doctor? They're a great tool to introduce a new guy, but they're not even really *needed* for that. Do a few more Smith stories, or not. Same with McGann. Same thing goes with the concept of 'flashback' IMO. Just do a few McGann stories and leave everything else alone. Tales of the eighth doctor or some such - why wouldn't that work for TV?
^That's a brilliant idea, and it works with the way a lot of TV series are going. Essentially a series of mini-series. Give Smith a multi-part story. Give McGann one. Tennant and Capaldi get one. And maybe a team-up one.

This would have been particularly appropriate for this year, where there will be no new episodes other than a Christmas special. Why not get someone else to "show run" a movie or mini series starring McGann's Doctor or whatever. Or recast and do untold stories of Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee. Heck, have Pertwee's lookalike son Sean do Pertwee episodes!
A friend of mine and I worked out how to shift to McGann (or, really, any other Doctor) instantly and in continuity for as many episodes as you'd like without going to a "Tales of the Doctor" format. Since the companions are the perspective characters in the new show, have the current companion and the current Doctor get separated in the story. The companion is on the run, trying to get back to the TARDIS, makes a turn and finds the TARDIS unexpectedly. But, being chased, it's a welcome surprise. The companion ducks into it, shouting for the Doctor . . .
. . . but the inside is different, And at the controls is McGann.
Then you can spin the stories into that companion and McGann for as long as you like -- one episode, one season -- and then wrap it up by dropping the companion back off at the same point they met, to go back to the current Doctor.
With a plot device like the TARDIS, all sorts of crossovers like this are do-able.
