Love it. I really hope this goes somewhere. Selfishly, I would love a 3D blu ray release also, since I just got a projector that does 3D wonderfully.

The planned 3D releases that predated the sale to Disney are probably a very low priority for them right now. The 3D releases of the classic trilogy was only going to be the Special Editions anyways.

Another promising rumor on the release of the theatrical cuts on Blu Ray.

For a long time Star Wars fans have been clamoring for Disney/Lucasfilm to re-release the original, unaltered cut of the first Star Wars trilogy, and Comicbook.com has now confirmed with two independent reliable sources that just such a plan is under way. According to our sources, Disney has plans to release the original cut of […]

I'm hoping Disney officially announces the theatrical cut Blu Rays at the upcoming NYCC for a holiday 2014 release.

Totally, this one is spreading like wildfire across the net. Even yahoo news picked it up.

I did make the mistake of reading some of the comments in the reports. I really gotta stop doing that. Comment sections are like Troll paradises.

While the vast majority are just happy about the possibility that the original theatrical cuts are finally getting released, there is a very vocal but also very tiny handful of posters going absolutely apespit that the original films might no longer be suppressed. Going even as far as gleefully posting lies/disinformation about the ownership of the movies. Like, Fox owns SW and Disney can't release the movies. But, as we all know, Fox only has the distribution rights and only the distribution rights. Disney totally and completely owns Lucasfilm, SW and the movies. Meaning, if/when Disney decides to release the movies on home video, Fox has the exclusive rights to distribute them or at least until 2020 when they lose the distribution rights to Empire and Jedi. But they will still retain permanent distribution rights to the first SW movie.

I am no fan of SW, but the fans deserve an unrestored version of the trilogy. I personally like the SE but that too, has never been released on DVD. As they made further edits (Hayden at the end of Jedi, for instance).

Still remember seeing "Star Wars" on opening day in the theatre - standing room only ......

                You'd never see that nowadays

                  No argument there.

But also just as a matter of film preservation and protecting our shared culture heritage, films deserve to be preserved, seen and enjoyed in their original form. I'm not even opposed to director's cut or special editions of films. I'm only against those new cuts replacing the originals. I feel it's deeply wrong to try to suppress and rewrite history.

For example, I think the Prequel Trilogy isn't very good. But I would be opposed to editing the movies to try to make them "better" and I have no interest in fan edits out there that try to do that. The prequels are what they are. They are a reflection of the time they were made and should be seen in their original theatrical form. I'm against what are considered even small "improvements" like how the Yoda puppet was replaced in Phantom Menace.

I personally like the SE but that too, has never been released on DVD.
I would not be opposed to the 97 Special Editions available on Blu Ray in a high quality transfer. I saw them at the theater and still have the VHS box set.

I too would like the original, unaltered trilogy on Blu-ray. Hope it happens!

I still vividly remember seeing Star Wars in the theatre during the summer of '77. The first of many times. A life changing experience.

Here's a really well done article about the De-Specialized fan restoration. I think it also helps raise awareness of the importance of the restoration and preservation of historically and culturally important films like Star Wars.

Some interesting thoughts and analysis about the 4k restoration of the original negatives news that leaked.

You raise a very interesting question, but where does one draw the line? As long as it's the original creator making the changes, aren't they valid?
Suppose you buy a house and remodel it, aren't you "changing" the original architect's vision of what that house was supposed to be?
What about comic reprints where the coloring is changed or enhanced? That's done all the time. No one would dream of altering the pencils or inks of Jack Kirby or John Romita, but the colorist? Their work gets tossed as if it means nothing.

I should add, Marvel's new series of TPB Marvel Masterworks made a specific point to restore the original colors to each and every book.

I already answered this. I have no problems with director cuts. I only have a problem when these director cuts or special editions are intended to replace the original theatrical prints.

To quote George Lucas in his passionate 1988 speech before congress on protecting and preserving film history and our shared cultural heritage.

"People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.

Attention should be paid to this question of our soul, and not simply to accounting procedures. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself."

Film history and our shared cultural heritage does not belong to the film studios or one man. It belongs to us all and must be protected and preserved for future generations.

Disney Italy has pulled the ad showing Star Wars clips. I guess they showed it too soon.
