For example, I think the Prequel Trilogy isn't very good. But I would be opposed to editing the movies to try to make them "better" and I have no interest in fan edits out there that try to do that. The prequels are what they are. They are a reflection of the time they were made and should be seen in their original theatrical form. I'm against what are considered even small "improvements" like how the Yoda puppet was replaced in Phantom Menace.
This expresses exactly how I feel.
Everybody can choose the version of SW they want to see, as long as the untampered original is out there and available.
I don't care if they do a version where The Emperor sings "me and my shadow" with a chorus line of tapdancing gamorrean guards behind him (heck, I'd watch that...), but history is history, and we should all be able to see what it was in 1977.
We get classic books they way they were, why not movies?
As it stands now, I'll watch the DVD from the 2 disc set.

Just looking at this old thread and noticed that in one of the pics posted it shows the Widescreen LD's. Star Wars says Stereo Extended Play. Empire doesn't say that....is it Stereo?

Also, are each countries early LD's equal in terms of quality? Here's a pic of a UK copy of the earlier Laserdisc of Star Wars:

Resolution lines are higher(See lower right hand corner of the LD) ...does this mean that it was a better quality disc visually? Or were all the LD's made off of the same master(s) LD?

PAL does have a slightly better picture quality than NTSC (with 625 lines compared to 525), but NTSC has a frame rate of 30FPS whereas PAL has 25FPS).
