Ooh, I wanted to check out Time Crimes on NetFlix. Safety Not Guaranteed is in my instant queue, it's Sci Fi?Comment

I saw this when you first posted and needed to take some time to really think about what movies I actually thought were good Sci-Fi films. I can't believe so many mentioned Prometheus. Was that really "good"? Children of Men was a huge disappointment. District 9 got weird but not in a good way. Too often main stream sci-fi gets overhyped or overdone with special effects. For me what really drives a Science-Fiction story is actually the human element. I'm sure most people on the planet saw films like Inception so I tried to think of some films you probably didn't see. So in no particular order, these are the ones that stuck with me and would highly recommend because they are all great movies:
A Scanner Darkly (Probably Keanu Reeves best movie and based off a Philip Dick story. Also Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder are in it and it's quasi-animated)
Moon (Sam Rockwell carries this movie all by himself and it's directed by David Bowies son of all people)
Cloverfield (Shakey cam aside, this is the best Godzilla movie ever.)
Apollo 18 (Not to be confused with the Tom Hanks/Ron Howard Film Apollo 13. This "found footage" movie of the last manned mission to the Moon is the space version of Cloverfield)
Titan A.E. (Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore in an awesome Don Bluth film. If this had come out in the 80's, it'd be a classic)
Impostor (Another little known Philip Dick movie starring Gary Sinise. Kind of a low budget, "who done it" Sci-Fi film.)
Cube (Not THE CUBE or Gleaming the Cube, just CUBE. There are two awesomely equal sequels too titled Cube 2 and Cube Zero. Also check out the stupidly titled, non-Sci-Fi version, The Killing Room)
Donnie Darko (This is a "love it or hate movie" I loved it. Part mystery, part Sci-Fi it'll keep you guessing till the end and thinking about it long after it's over)
Take Shelter (Michael Shannon drives this movie from start to finish. Is the Apocalypse coming or is he just going crazy?)
Pandorum (Basically it's Dead Space The Movie but since it's been recommended several times already and you've seen it, I'll mention something else.)
Monsters (Forget District 9. This is a great example of how we'd view aliens once they've been here for a while.)
Honorable mentions also go out to Sunshine (the sun is dying), Primer (a time travel movie so low budget it only cost $7000 to make), and Right At Your Door, which isn't really a sci-fi film (a dirty bomb goes off in LA and everyone exposed is infected), but is just as good as everything else mentioned above.Last edited by spacecaps; Sep 10, '13, 11:20 AM."Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you."Comment

I enjoyed Apollo 18 when I caught it on cable. And I'm not big of lost footage films. It's on NetFlix streaming now.Comment

But, they are some in your list that I liked, so don't despair too much..OK...here I go...
A Scanner Darkly...I found it to be an annoying, pretentious, pointless, and tedious affair...to be brutally honest, I did not finish the movie. This was hardly Keanu Reeves' best movie, I can think of several on top of my head that were more enjoyable, starting with Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, lol. Then there's Speed, Point Break, and of course, The Matrix.
Moon...Totally agree with you on this one...it's already a cult classic in my eyes.
Cloverfield...I did like this movie (to a point)...but best "Godzilla" movie ever? Dude, lay down that pipe, lol. Found footage flicks are for the most part annoying to me...really, admist all that chaos, the dude never stops taping, lol. Besides, I was rooting for the monster big time, couldn't wait for it to kill all those annoying and obnoxious hipsters, lol.
Apollo 18...I was anticipating this movie so much, and when I finally saw it, I was highly disappointed. It felt like it was a sci-fi version of The Blair Witch Project, which I hated. Don't you EVER, and I do mean EVER, mention Apollo 18 alongside the awesome Apollo 13...yes, different movies...but Apollo 13 is IMO Ron Howard's best movie...a movie that I own, and have watched at least 20 times. I'll never watch Apollo 18 ever again, it was totally pointless...
Titan A.E....Great friggin' animated movie...highly underrated too...so we are in full agreement here.
Impostor...A movie that went under the radar...and yes...well done...so another check here, lol.
Cube...It was OK...I prefer Hellraiser.
Donnie Darko...I can't believe I forgot this one...I LOVE this flick...takes you back to the 80s...love that bunny, creepy but cool.
Take Shelter...I have not seen this one, and I like Michael Shannon, will check it out, thanks.
Pandorum...I already mentioned this one...and I utterly loved it.
Monsters...I'm glad you listed this one last, because I wanted to save it for last, lol. It was not bad, a mixture of Cloverfield and the Fog remake...but I lost complete respect for this movie when the couple got to the Mexico/USA border...there was a friggin' pyramid there...ROTFLMFAO...boy, oh boy, talk about not doing your research, that's what I call lazy filmmaking or plain ignorance...a pretty bad sense of geography...there are no bloody pyramids in northern Mexico and there are no tropical forests in northern Mexico...again...ROTFLMFAO. And I'm quite surprised you yourself didn't take issue with this...I follow your posts...and you have a good understanding of history and science...come on, man. I rolled up my eyes and started laughing my arse off when I got to that unbelievably ridiculous scene. District 9 was a whole lot better...at least they got South Africa right, lol.
Overall good list though, good job man...

Spacecaps, you didn't dig Prometheus?! I can't remember the last time a movie has been so "talked about" in scifi circles! Aside from a few holes that I assume we're left in for entertainment purposes, it has made my top 10 list "of all time" scifi movies along with the classics everyone loves! The buzz is only building for the next one, and I feel sorry for Ridley as I don't know if he can make a movie that exceeds or meets the expectations of the base.Comment

I don't know if it has been mentioned here yet, but Children of Men was a really good sci-fi flick. Well worth a view. And it takes place in the UK, too.I know Moon and Looper were discussed and those were good as well.Last edited by megoapesnut; Sep 12, '13, 9:15 AM.Comment

I kind of liked Event Horizon. Not a great movie, but it had its moments.Comment

Has anyone seen Lunapolis? It keeps popping up on NetFlix, but I'm not sure I want to give it a shot.
Also, avoid Beyond the Black Rainbow. Visuals are pretty stunning in some parts, but a whole lot of nothing happens and the antagonist in the film is obnoxious and hamfisted.Comment
