I thought "Dredd" was a great action/sci-fi movie because it did a lot of things I think we're all familiar with from other movies, but put it's own memorable spin on things.
The setting: I think we're all use to seeing the dystopian future backdrop, but this movie managed to feel original, I think because of it's influence coming from England instead of doing what most movies do and base their vision of the future on Blade Runner or a junky version of Tokyo.
The characters: we're use to seeing movies with the classic "I'm going to clean up this town" cowboy, but the fact that a character like that is basically a fascist is usually not something you think about while watching the movie - this movie puts that in the forefront. I've never read much of the comics, but I'm sure it expands on this theme a lot more. Plus, I thought Lena Headey as the main bad guy was fantastic!
The use of 3D: I didn't even see this movie in 3D, but I could tell that it was doing some very original and thoughtful things to weave the 3D images into the story. Not just use 3D as an added gimmick. (I won't ruin what tricks it does with the plot to do this, because I think it's a nice surprise when you're watching it.)
The action: Keeping the whole movie focused in one area gave the movie an intensity that most action movies (and especially sci-fi action movies) are afraid to try, because action movies always try so hard to make the scope of what they're doing large and epic. Yeah, it had a video game feeling, and even the idea of Dredd trying to conquer each floor like a level of a video game enhanced that - but I thought that was neat and kind of added to it. Again, I'm a fan of violent movies, so when people are 'sploden all perdy-like I'm having fun, to be honest.Comment

Most of my suggestions have been used already, but I would add:
--Primer
--The Adjustment Bureau
Primer may bore the stink out of you, but it's a pretty great concept presented in a very realistic manner. And it only cost $7,000 to make.Comment
