Why the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray is going to rip you off

Perhaps this will put the final nail in JJ Abrams version of Trek and we can all move on. The fans aren't as rabidly loyal to his version to buy every edition on DVD when it comes out just to have all the special features and I wasn't buying it anyway.

Despite its mixed reviews, surely some of you were looking forward to the DVD and Blu-ray release of Star Trek Into Darkness. You were probably looking

"...Paramount is about to screw you like Kirk in an Orion Slave Girl sorority house...Paramount has divvied up all the other features — including the commentary tracks with the cast and director J.J. Abrams, and several additional featurettes — have been given exclusive to the Target release, the Best Buy release, and the iTunes download. Meaning 1) if you buy the normal version you're getting less than half the special features created for the home video release, and 2) if you want all of them you're going to need to purchase at least three separate versions."

That's still not as bad as WB's Dark Knight Returns animated movie. The entire movie was under three hours long. There was absolutely NO reason to release it in two parts and charge $20 for each half. $40 for an animated movie? Puhleeze. Plenty of suckers bought it though. Well now they're releasing the entire thing on one blu ray with additional bonus materials for $25.

I'll wait for the price to drop and pick the one that has the features I want to see the most. I don't think DVD/BluRay marketing strategy is going to affect Abrams' future at the Trek helm. I do hope for better things in STIII.

Same here. We have a nice set up in Louisville. There's a local video store that rents a ton of new movies on DVD and Blu Ray. But after about six weeks, they start marking them way down to sell off. Ill be able to pick up that new Star Trek on Blu ray for under $10.00 by Halloween. I never saw it in the theaters, so I'll probably rent the blu ray for $2.00 and see if I even want it. I don't let any of these studios bite me on the releases. They only hurt themselves.

Sounds like I'm living in the wrong state.

That's how I roll on most of them too. I still have a Blockbuster nearby, and every few months I partake of their 3-for-$20 deal or something similar on previously viewed discs.

Luckily, special features don't mean as much to me as they used to. Most commentaries these days aren't that entertaining to me, and most of the featurettes are studio puff pieces or pretty useless. And yeah, I'm waiting for a price drop anyway. Maybe Amazon will have a good deal on Black Friday.

Well, I loved the movie and will be buying it the day it comes out! I'm bad, never to watch the commentary anyways, so that is of little importance to me.

I don't care for extra features, etc...I'm just happy watching the movie.

It's a crummy precedent, though. I think in this age of downloaded media, if some loyal sucker (ie. myself) is foolish enough to plunk down the dough for the physical disc, they should give 'em a nice complete set of bonus materials for their buck. For this Star Trek movie, I could care less, but if it was something I genuine cared about, yeah, I'd be miffed.

It's like encouraging piracy by proxy.

Well, this does tick me off. I ordered this believing I did not have to worry about getting it from this or that place (more than one) to get all the features.

I got the Wal-Mart exclusive version that comes with the toy ship so I'm happy.

I do enjoy special features (especially making-of featurettes) and I think buying a physical disc should get you all the features.

I haven't opened mine yet but the back of the package claims to be "Packed with Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes and More! I don't know if I'm missing out on some features or not.

This stunt really has gone over like a lead brick in the fan community. It will be interesting to see what the industry response will be, if this sort of practice will continue or not. In other words, does this positively or negatively impact sales. Someone at Paramount will need to analyze lots of pie charts and multicolored graphs correlating fan base goodwill and Bluray sales figures.

Yeah, DVD/blu ray sites said that Paramount has felt the heat for this move and may be thinking of how to make amends. My idea would be a bonus disc with the iTunes commentary (this is actually a more interactive commentary where they freeze, replay and telestrate over the movie) trailers, featurettes and more and make it available for something like $5 plus proof of purchase.
