Mikey, they did release the original '77 movie on DVD in 2006. It was in a 2 DVD set which in now out of print.

Used copies are out there, not terribly rare, but certainly in demand.

The old VHS version from the mid-90s was also the original I believe...

Non anamorphic dvd disk in the 6 disk set released in 2008(?). I got this set just for the original theatrical releases of the 3 movies.
I also have a VHS widescreen set that I think are the theatrical releases.

edit: Just checked the VHS and it ANH.

...and though I cannot speak from personal experience, some hardcore types speak with reverence of the original trilogy on the Laser Disc format!

          Those were uncut and original.

Only the Laser Disc and on the 2008 Star Wars DVD's bonus disc. The 2008 bonus disc is a transfer from the Laser Disc. It is not enhanced for widescreen TVs and suffers from what is now a very out of date digital transfer. But, even with its flaws, it is the best version commercially available of the original theatrical print of Star Wars.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

The "original version" DVDs are transferred from these Laser Discs.

Unfortunately I'd imagine those laserdiscs and the non-anamorphic DVDs they were ported to probably look horrible on a larger HDTV. I've still been considering picking up the laserdisc box set but I've heard that they are prone to laser rot. *sigh* Here's to hoping that Disney sets things right in the future. Maybe they'll come out after "Song of the South" does.

I imagine that when they new SW movies come out, Disney will release just about anything they can make a buck on.

So the 1977-1983 versions of the original trilogy on BR are quite possible.
