Like I said, there are different favors of Trek. The flavor I like the best is the one that sidetracks the usual let's fight an enemy deal and perhaps even find a new life form deal. Like Cobromite Manuever, Devil In The Dark, etc. but Star Trek is flexible enough to do a great thrill ride too but with the good character interaction. The idea of the Enterprise crashing into the water and coming back out again (if I read the previews correctly) is enough to have me a bit stoked.
All the actors were perfectly cast.
The thing I like about the new Trek, the supporting crew, Uhura, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, they all do something constructive and important, and at times, they are the ones doing the heroic thing, saving fellow crew members, and even the entire ship like Scotty did (Spock seemed to cover his shortcomings many at times in the old days)...in the old days with the old cast, they were just basically background actor and little more than props.
I have fully accepted this new Trek as the real Trek, I refused to live in the past, all for the goodComment

I really enjoyed it. It's not the Trek I grew up with but it's good. Lots of old Trek references or updated versions. Without spoiling it I liked how things played out the same but different from the classic Trek.
While I like Simon Pegg's Scotty, I feel his Scott says 'funny things' while Doohan's said 'things funny'. They have to be careful that Pegg doesn't become too campy with that take.Better late than never.....Comment

Special effects have risen to a level that they are so good that they really aren't that special any more, but that isn't a problem with this movie. It really is a sharp-looking, well-designed and structured film that just happens to have a solid story and excellent character development to boot.
And Abrams and the screenwriters deftly use previous continuity to their favor - even though the film goes its own way - unlike say Superman Returns where the nods to the past took me out of the story rather than drawing me into it.
This is the second film in as many weeks - Baz Luhrman's Great Gatsby is the other - where 3D actually enhances the film and becomes part of the story telling and not just a gimmick.Comment
