Escape from New York to be rebooted

Not so sure this is a film that would work today. The original is fun for who was in it and for when it was made. It was also a vehicle intended to "dirty up" Kurt Russell's image from his Disney days and make him more mainstream for action films. The story itself is kind of yesterday in context. I'm not so sure that story would be engaging now. Heck when Carpenter and Russell got together years ago to do a sequel, it didn't look or feel like a valid bookend for the series either. I'm assuming Colin Farrell will play the lead role. Not that his name is in the article, but these days he seems to be involved in every failed remake out there. Cheap labor?

He's the duke of new York. Hes a number one!!

Snake is a timeless BA. The concept of a crazed future wherein all criminals are placed in maximum security on manhattan seems pretty palatible to the hunger games generation. I think it could fly just fine. The only question i would have is the tired old - 'why mess with a classic'? Hollywood seems to like to do that, tho and I'm sure the 3d will be amazing.

I think Russell can still play Snake just fine. Escape from LA was pretty lame (with really bad CG and a boring bad guy), so how about ending it just right, with the right people.
Wasn't Gerard Butler going to play Snake?

I wish Farrell would finally do what he has been promising for ten years; retire fom acting and start a pub in Ireland. I'm all for it!
When he was in Belgium filming In Bruges, he complained to the press that nobody recognized him. Maybe it's because your acting sucks, Colin!

the original is a classic, but it is also very, very dated. i think if the remake is done right, it could be pretty damn cool. they need to set it further in the future too. the original came out in 81 and was set in what? 1999? too soon for things to have changed in our society that drastically. set it 100 years in the future and send in Snake.

That Guy Pierce movie "Lockout" was more or less already an "Escape from New York" reboot... It was pretty good, too.

I saw it when we were all kids, but just recently in the past year maybe have really developed an appreciation for it and Carpenter, in particular. I think they should let it ride and not mess with it.

                  Meh.

They could easily do a remake. Problem is; this is one of them stories that got ripped off SO MANY times in the 80's anything they do is gonna seem old hat.

I have one simple rebuttle - 2001 a Space Oddessy and 2010 the year we make contact
In 1966 Doctor who the Tenth planet was set in 1986 with the assumption we'd have a moonbase (a point that JNT had to explain in the 1985 story Revenge of the Cybermen).

seriously though society went through alot of turmoil from 66-80 and things were pretty bad.
It was a statement by Carpenter against the regan era as much as anything.
it is always a risk in scifi. Look at the arc of tech develpoment and assume it will continue at the same pace. in 58 years we went from the first flight of a plane to putting a man in space (gregarin in 61) to a man on the moon in 69. I grew up fully expecting us to get to mars in my lifetime now there isn't even a nasa manned space vehicle program
