I really don't mind the trilogy aspect of it. It's not like there's going to be a film adaptation of The Silmarillion so this is going to be the last films from the world Tolkien created unless someone writes modern day sequels and I really don't think anyone wants that. What I don't like is the release dates. Christmas 2012, Christmas 2013, and then June 2014. This isn't Twilight and the fans of the franchise can wait a bit longer to see the conclusion plus I think a June release of the 3rd installment wouldn't compete well against all the action blockbusters of the summer. There's a reason all three LOTR movies came out around the holidays and having that one installment come out in the Summer just doesn't feel right. I wouldn't mind waiting another year for that final installment. I didn't care for the June Harry Potter releases either but I saw them then anyway and I'll do the same for the Hobbit but I hope they push it back.
I can't wait. the more material they mine the better as far as I am concerned. the Hobbit was such a differnet book than LOTR they had to flesh it out.....3 movies might be too much but time will tell. planning on taking the whole family to see it.
This is a novel less than a third as long as the Lord of the rings.
MAYBE I would give it 2 movies.
I understand the hardcore Rings fans will see it at any length and still want more.
For me the third LotR was TOO long (unnecessarily) I just wanted it to be over. But for the big fans they bought up each progessively longer rerelease on DVD.
Just release a NORMAL fiim and then milk the LotR nuts.
I realize it will probably make massive money anyway but I think that a movie consistent with the source material may do better.
Is this going to be just one film? I've heard of at least one more, but I havent heard anything since. (It seems to be popular now to split a book into two films)
It's going to be a trilogy, they made the official announcement a few months back. Jackson will be mining the substantial material in the LOTR and Hobbit appendices to expand the storylines.
I'm waiting a few weeks but i'm definately seeing it. I've already heard that some of the camera work is causing motion sickness.
Besides the story, I'm looking forward to the cameos from many of the actors from LOTR.

I'm still very much looking forward to seeing it..
Also, just as a side note to the powers that be, could the name of the Science Fiction forum possibly be amended to Science Fiction & Fantasy? One doesn't necessarily mean the other, but historically they've always been under the same umbrella..
