    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Surprised no one had started an "official" thread yet for this movie, so with just a week or so until opening, here we go..

Reviews that have trickled out so far have been mostly positive, tho many are measured in their praise..

Discover reviews, ratings, and trailers for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Rotten Tomatoes. Stay updated with critic and audience scores today!

I'm still very much looking forward to seeing it..

Also, just as a side note to the powers that be, could the name of the Science Fiction forum possibly be amended to Science Fiction & Fantasy? One doesn't necessarily mean the other, but historically they've always been under the same umbrella..

I'm waiting a few weeks but i'm definately seeing it. I've already heard that some of the camera work is causing motion sickness.

Besides the story, I'm looking forward to the cameos from many of the actors from LOTR.

Is this going to be just one film? I've heard of at least one more, but I havent heard anything since. (It seems to be popular now to split a book into two films)

It's going to be a trilogy, they made the official announcement a few months back. Jackson will be mining the substantial material in the LOTR and Hobbit appendices to expand the storylines.

I am annoyed it is a trilogy.

This is a novel less than a third as long as the Lord of the rings.

MAYBE I would give it 2 movies.

I understand the hardcore Rings fans will see it at any length and still want more.

For me the third LotR was TOO long (unnecessarily) I just wanted it to be over. But for the big fans they bought up each progessively longer rerelease on DVD.

Just release a NORMAL fiim and then milk the LotR nuts.

I realize it will probably make massive money anyway but I think that a movie consistent with the source material may do better.

I can't wait. the more material they mine the better as far as I am concerned. the Hobbit was such a differnet book than LOTR they had to flesh it out.....3 movies might be too much but time will tell. planning on taking the whole family to see it.

I really don't mind the trilogy aspect of it. It's not like there's going to be a film adaptation of The Silmarillion so this is going to be the last films from the world Tolkien created unless someone writes modern day sequels and I really don't think anyone wants that. What I don't like is the release dates. Christmas 2012, Christmas 2013, and then June 2014. This isn't Twilight and the fans of the franchise can wait a bit longer to see the conclusion plus I think a June release of the 3rd installment wouldn't compete well against all the action blockbusters of the summer. There's a reason all three LOTR movies came out around the holidays and having that one installment come out in the Summer just doesn't feel right. I wouldn't mind waiting another year for that final installment. I didn't care for the June Harry Potter releases either but I saw them then anyway and I'll do the same for the Hobbit but I hope they push it back.

I am having a hard time getting used to the look of Thorin. I grew up with this

and wore out my RankinBass album set.

I LOVE the Rankion bass Hobbit, the songs by Glen Yarborough, Orson Bean as bilbo, and Palladin Richard Boone as Smog. Just great. Also good was the Retun of the King from Rankin bass. I never cared for the bass version of Lord of the Rings as much as these more cartoony versions
In one clip for the new one I saw a dwarf singing the history song that plays as Thorin tells the tale of Smog.
I am loathe to admit that after the new LOTR it was so long I never got around to watching the others I just can't commit to a 4plus hour film

7th Dr Sylvester Mccoy is in it so odds are I will see it jkust fot that

                      Blue ray rental for me.

Seen all three LOTR movies once (first one at the theaters, and the sequels on DVD), no need to see them again.

The same will apply to the Hobbit.

Having said that, the LOTR trilogy is indeed superior to the super lame Jar Jar Wars trilogy, by a trillion miles, lol.

I am, as well. This guy would look great in a viking movie, but he's too young and hip looking to be the King Under the Mountain, IMHO. If Thorin had been an Amon Amarth roadie or a LARPing trucker, I'd think "nailed it," but that's not the case.

I'm looking forward to it. Believe it or not, I've just started watching the LOTR trilogy. I saw the first one when it hit DVD back in 2001, but that's right around when my son was born. The thought of going to a 3-hour movie when he was 2 and 3 precluded me from seeing the others, and I just kept putting it off.

Wal-Mart still had the DVDs for $1.96 the Saturday after Black Friday, so I went for it. Me and the boy watched "Fellowship" and "Two Towers" so far. I love 'em!

                            Hmmmm....

Yeah, Rankin/Bass pulled off a perfectly awesome one in an hour and a half. I'd heard one of the things they've done with the new films is add a lot of stuff from the Silmarillion and other sources. (Like Gandalf's.... cousin, is it?)

I dunno; I didn't care for the Lord of the Rings films, mostly 'cos I'd read the books and knew what was going to happen. (I'm kinda tired of EVERY film having a Kurosawa-esque mass combat scene too.) So I'm lukewarm on these.

I hope they also play the movie in simple 2D, without all the fuss.
I dislike seeing films in 3D already: I think the image is darker and unclear, and have to wear that stupid junk over my other glasses as well.
I have no desire to feel like I'm "in the movie", and hate "shaky cam" movies.
