I wish I was excited to see this as I was the LOTR, but I'm just not.

I dislike seeing films in 3D already: I think the image is darker and unclear, and have to wear that stupid junk over my other glasses as well.
I have no desire to feel like I'm "in the movie", and hate "shaky cam" movies.
Looking forward to seeing this but not in 3D also, give me it in 2D any day.

I'm a huge Tolkien nerd, scholar, buff, and I can't wait. I've already got tickets for the midnight showing opening night. I too grew up with the Ranking Bass version and loved it. I love the songs and the art as well. Its obvious they tried to use an Arthur Rackham style to the background illustrations especially. I even got the four volume LP book and record set on ebay a few years ago and my seven year old loves it. I hope these Hobbit movies are as good as the LOTR saga. I don't know how they're going to stretch it out to include three films even with the added materials from the LOTR appendices but I'm hopeful nonetheless.

I'm with you on the darker and glasses over glasses part, but in this case I'll still opt for the 3D version, since that's how the film was shot. For the movies that are post-converted into 3D, I normally opt for the standard 2D..

The last few movies my family and I went to see were in 3D. We couldn't opt for the 2d or we would have. Both times we left with headaches, I don't know if its the glasses or my toric contact lenses but it was killer. My tickets for the Hobbit are in 3D and I hope its a bit clearer the Wreck it Ralph and Hotel Transylvania.

I call it the "View master effect", because that's all it really is. Perceived depth through multi-imaging. Your brain has to take all of that and create a singular image which gives a perception of depth. I have ZERO interest in it. We'll be seeing the 2-D version.

I loved LOTR and should be excited about this film, but somehow I'm not. The trilogy aspect concerns me--will it be bloated, off-canon?

I would have felt more conmfortable with a 2-parter, with some some Silmarillon prelude.

I went to the theatre and swapped my tickets for the 2d and saved some bucks! I also retread the novel over the last few days to brush up. I'm going tomorrow at noon. I'll try to post sans spoilers tomorrow afternoon.

Sooo.......I've heard this movie is pretty bad. Someone actually went as far to call it "The Phantom Menace of the decade" I hope this isn't the case and I'll reserve judgment till I see it this weekend but my expectations are pretty low at this point.

I read a review yesterday that just slammed it from beginning to end.

It's really surprising to hear this. Who would have thought Jackson would have dropped the ball? I still want to check it out for myself, but I did not expect this reaction.

Im suspecting (and hoping) that the reason its not liked by some is because its different for LOTR. It is a more juvenile story with less suspense.

A part of me is hoping theres alot of back story from The Silmarillion. It's really where my interest is.
