I think it's very possible this is a prank by Abbrams.
He seems like the kind of person who would do this - like showing the clip on Conan
Having a prank teaser poster would be great
Y'know, I didn't think about THAT, Mikey. You may be on to something with this theory simply due to the fact that Abrams does have a somewhat warped sense of humor (not that there's anything wrong with that). I think he could, indeed, be "punking" us....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
Speculation has the figure in the poster being Gary Mitchell, which fits with the brief plot synopsis Paramount released:
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
It would be nice to see the full potential of post-contact-with-the-Galactic-Barrier Gary Mitchell realized on the big screen. I remember watching that episode of TOS after reading the whole DARK PHOENIX saga in X-MEN and realizing that Claremont must've been a fan of that episode, as well, since there are a number of similarities in the two characters.
It's also been speculated that Mitchell came into contact with Q Energy, which could open the door for a Q appearance in this new TREK reality, something I wouldn't mind since I alway thought that the Q were quite intriguing...

The teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness is up (pretty much everywhere) and while it looks impressive, I, unfortunately, do NOT get any kind of a TREK vibe from it. My biggest nitpicks would still be regarding the way the ENTERPRISE is being handled. In Roddenberry's vision, the ENTERPRISE is a MASSIVE ship, waaaaay to large to support it's own weight in Earth's atmosphere, let own in the freakin' ocean!!! They're gonna have to do some mighty tall 'splainin' to get me to swallow these digressions....

Just saw the first official movie poster release over on Cosmic Book News and it seems to me like the Star Trek camp seems to have a little DARK KNIGHT envy going on with this one...
^Ha! I hadn't even thought of how much all of those recent posters have in common. But the DKR/Trek connection with the franchise symbols and wrecked buildings is just TOO close.
