Early reviews have been pretty good so far.
Apparently it fully delivers on its promise of epic scale mecha vs kaiju carnage.

Hmmmm....
I've heard some mixed stuff, but none of which tells me what's important to ME. I think for me what'll denote how I feel about the film.... which I suspect IS pretty typical.... is the ratio of monster stomping to "Maveric! You're a loose cannon.... but I love you!" scenes.

>The first trailer I saw in theaters, I thought the robots were Iron Man
Yeah.... that's another concern for me; the overall designs are very 1970's super-robot, but they busy them up with all the pipework and plating. I hate that look, 'cos it's a really bad idea for a combat machine. I think something closer to this would have been better:
....but if the film is still mostly giant robots punching out giant monsters I'm okay with it.

Saw it this morning in IMAX 3D.
Been anticipating this movie highly since it was first announced, and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
The characters are broadly drawn and likeable personalities who you really do want to prevail against the odds, and the action sequences are truly awesome.
For fans of kaiju movies, anime, mecha, etc... this is a must see.
Del Toro has done a great job with this movie.
And be sure to stick around for the post-credits coda.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

Thankfully, they kept the "human" side to an acceptable percentage. There are some training sequences, a few flashbacks, a few research sequences in the lab, and some (genuinely entertaining) character moments featuring the main protagonists, but there's certainly plenty of full on kaiju vs. jaeger action.PUNY HUMANS!Comment
