I wonder who's going to be playing the bad guy?? I would LOVE to see another Irvin Kershner or someone with his ideas and talent to direct the next SW movie. He did just a BRILLIANT job on "Empire Strikes Back".

Yep. That's what I am hoping for. Disney is hopefully only going to care about potential money to be made not what version Lucas wants people to see.

I'm glad Lucas did this, but I have to believe he must have some serious health issues overtaking him that are dictating this move. This is not a man that would take anyone's direction just a few short years ago. And in March of this year he pronounced Star Wars "dead" (see below). Now he's giving it all away? That sounds like a man on his death bed making final decisions. Something has got to be up.

not saying he might not have health issues, but he certainly did not look ill in the interviews about this. plus it was revealed he met with Mark and Carrie last year about the new movies. i think he just lies a lot and keeps things close so he does not have to talk about them publicly

So does anyone know if Hamill, Ford, and Fisher are on board for Episode 7? I would say that is the $4 billion question.

^^^ Last I read, Hamill Hated being refured to as Luke .
Then 10 Years Pass ..., and He now Hates being known for Joker's Cartoon Voice, and Has Retired from that as Well. Fisher does so many Fan Boy things ...., I'd say She would be on board.

I would actually kinda doubt it (doesn't Ford hate the Han Solo character?) and I personally hope they'd recast the roles with younger actors. There's just so much more storywise they could do with Han, Luke, Leia, etc as characters. Just look how long they milked the time between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith with the animated series.

Depending on the what point in time they use, I could see Hamill & Fisher returning. While Hamill might "hate" being known for certain things it's different that hating the character or role as Ford seems to.

If they continue the storyline after Jedi, I don't wan't to see a movie with Luke and Leia in their 60s and Han Solo in his 70s. I would also ignore all the EU books and have it take place right after Jedi ended. Just because the Emperor is dead doesn't mean the Empire is just going to give up. There is still a galaxy filled with Star Destroyers, legions of heavily armed imperial troops and Generals waiting to take command. Destroying the second Death Star and killing the Emperor is a huge victory but not the end of the war.

Absolutely. The Empire is not dead. Far from it. Martial law is still in force throughout the galaxy, and Imperial garrisons are still stationed on thousands of planets.

With countless bureaucrats, dignitaries and imperial officers vying for power in the wake of the Emperor's demise, there might even be an internal power struggle, but the Empire is still in control.

The Alliance's victory will certainly have inspired a lot of oppressed planets, but the Empire should be able to put down any insurrections and civil unrest, and withstand the inevitable desertions after the defeat at the Battle of Endor.

The Galactic Civil War isn't over yet.

As reported earlier, looks like GL will give the majority of that 4 billion dollars to charity... or more precisely, "educational philanthropy".

George Lucas, who just finalized a deal to sell his company LucasFilm, has announced that he will be putting the vast majority of the $4.3 billion dollars from the sale into a foundation which will focus on education according to the Hollywood Reporter. Lucas is the sole shareholder of LucasFilm so the entire sum will go to him and he is free to do what he wants with all of it. This donation will put him on par with Bill Gates in terms of his charitable giving.

A spokesman for Lucasfilm told the Hollywood Reporter:

“George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”

It is not clear if Lucas will put the money into one of his existing charities or if he will start a new one to deal with new educational issues that he wants to tackle. Lucas is currently the chairman of Edutopia, which is part of the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

Lucas said in a statement released Wednesday:

“For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

Hard to know where they will start the next installment. I would think considerable time will need to have pass to establish the new order and develop a new villain as it were. These films will be the most challenging because Darth Vader is gone. In effect, they have to trump the ultimate sci-fi villain with a new one. Tough duty. If I had to go out on a limb I still think Luke is susceptible. His career as a Jedi is not so unlike that of his father's. And only he could be reasoned to take on a resemblance to his father if he were to turn to the dark side. Perhaps in tribute? Maybe the empire will have an underground network that will champion Luke by showing him examples of the oppressed under the new order? I know because of Luke's glorious history, people may react harshly to that conversion. But I don't see where there is much rationale with inventing another villain from nowhere and matching the history that is Vader's. It seems to me the course is set. It is...his destiny. Where's my galactic inhaler?

...or they just reveal Palpatine had another protege hidden in the wings......
i think we will probably not hear anything until next year, after the deal has finalized, and they actually start pre-production and casting. then let the theories fly

Several sources now say that the movies "will not be based on existing material (ep 1-6), but introducing new characters".
So it would seem that Luke and company might have cameos, but not much more.

But I think we're still in the "speculation" phase here, even when it comes from people who are involved on the new movies.

Mark Hamill did say that Lucas talked to him and Fisher about the new movies in the summer of 2011. If that means anything about their involvement, who knows...

                                .
