Sooo...you take Iron Man and spray paint him black...and you get Robocop?

If the other Robocop had never existed, I would say it isn't bad, and kind of makes sense since it looks like a futuristic extrapolation on real police armor. BUT, it does look very derivative of both Iron Man and Batman, with Tron thrown in as others have said. The original Robocop design was just one of those "ah-HA!" designs. It just looked dead on perfect. Even if the movie stunk, it was still fun to watch that design in motion.

Movie makers seem to think that making everything in black is so much better.
          I blame Bruce Wayne...

The 1987 Robocop design is timeless. It was good in 1987-it's still good now. The original script-writers of Robocop said in interviews that their big inspiration was Marvel Comics Iron Man. They're not streamlining or modernizing Robocop; this is just the self-loathing that Hollywood brings to projects like this. They want the Super Hero profits but water it down because they don't want to appear to be Super Hero.

They say the all black is the SWAT look, and it will change to a more civil (and traditional) look at times as well. I saw these two manips which make me more comfortable about the costume if CGI effects are added:
