A better example for that analogy would perhaps be ET, which was a concept he originated from scratch rather than adapted from another writer and another medium. Spielberg could easily have made a number of sequels to ET had he wished to do so, perhaps featuring some of the same characters as the original movie, or all new ones.
(And yet he may well have missed that particular window, as ET was by its very nature a product far more anchored in a particular era which resonated most strongly with the generation which originally experienced it. A fact perhaps proven by the film's poor reception during its 2002 theatrical re-release.)
Star Wars is a different animal in most repsects.
Every few years, a new group of kids discovers SW and become fans as a result.
It's a perennial franchise. Timeless by its very nature. It'll go on for as long as there's demand for it, and with the varying eras of the SW mythos and the myriad different mediums available via which to tell SW stories, the potential for engaging product remains, and more importantly to Lucasfilm, the potential for profit, remains.
Admittedly, the quality of some of that product is a separate argument entirely.Last edited by Bruce Banner; Feb 14, '12, 6:21 AM.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

What he needs to do is give money to some young people who are really passionate about Star Wars and tell them to make 3 more movies. Then he just has to stay out of their way. It'll be a hit.Comment
