They used beet root as food coloring. It's all natural, just like they use squid ink to color pasta.

Dark Vador has always been the French description of our favorite Sith Lord. There are even official early buttons and T-shirts using that name.
As a kid, I still remember once seeing a French Darth Vader figure licensed by Meccano, and wondering why they called him "Dark Vador".
An interesting, if perplexing, name change for the French market.
