The Phantom Edit is NOT a better version of the movie.
Sure, it removes a lot of Jar Jar and Anakin's dialogue, but it also slices out a lot of cool plot stuff which the phantom editor in his infinite "wisdom" deemed superfluous. Avoid.

I'll be seeing the 3D re-release.... largely beacuse the Tatooine Pod Race in 3D should be amazing.

          Hmmmm....

I don't get excited for effects in general, and 3D is the same. I know what's going to happen.... sweet merciful fates, no matter HOW MUCH I drink it's still there, lurking.... festering.... poisoning my mind....

....er.... so yeah; I already know what's going to happen so there isn't a big impetus to see it again. Now, a cleaned up Holiday Special in 3D....?

Wouldn't it be funny if they DID show the Holiday Special.... out of the blue as a warmup for a rerelease of the older films, or some special event?

And then the reedited Holiday Special, where Harvey Corman shoots first.

I wouldn't MIND seeing TPM in 3D as I remember there are lots of scenes which would lend themselves to the 3D experience, but I just can't bring myself to give even MORE money to Lucas and Company for the SAME PRODUCT, plus, since I already wear spectacles and have a crappy astigmatism, the 3D glasses just usually wind up giving me a headache....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

The ONLY thing worth a hell in Phantom is Darth Maul...but he alone couldn't save this garbage.

You know how much I hate the Phantom Menace?

I'd rather watch a marathon of repeat viewings of Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin...while eating fish eyeballs like popcorn...than watch that Phantom crap again...

I've been waiting for the Star Wars films to be re-released in the theaters, to introduce them to my oldest daughter (she's six). I can't wait!

From my perspective it needs to be true 3D. If ILM didn't go in and redo the effects in 3D then it's not worth watching. This red/yellow after-image they put over top of these films never intended to be 3D give what I call the "view master" effect. They sort of have depth to them, but it's a simply a trick on the brain because one color reaches your brain faster than the other. That's why you "think" your getting depth when in fact your really not.

As much as I don't love Phantom Menace I will go. Seeing the opening crawl and light saber fights on the big screen again is worth the price of admission. Plus hasn;t been many movies I've wanted to see lately.

Count me out, not a freakin chance. I also find it funny how in the commercial preview they show several scenes from the original 3.

I took my daughter to see Beauty and the Beast in 3D and they showed the trailer. I must say that it looks cool, but I am not too interested to see it. If my 6 year old said , I wanna see that, I would gladly take her. I have the DVDs, not the blu rays.
I agree with the folks about not paying again for the same product and I am a fan of star wars. The cool thing is that they are a timeless movie franchise that will be watched for years and will gain fans over and over. It gives folks a chance to see them for the fist time on the big screen, and others to see them again and again.
And that's what it's all about.
So if you go see it, enjoy.

I'm gonna check it out, kinda thinking the 3-D will be worth it for this.

I went to the first showing yesterday morning at my local theatre.

The 3D conversion is subtle, but effective.

They resisted the temptation to add a bunch of over the top "in your face" 3D moments.
Instead, they just added an overall sense of depth to the scenes throughout the movie.

For instance, the pod race hangar sequence before the race has a really tangible sense of depth, with all the activity going on in the background, and the senate chambers on Coruscant with the floating podiums is really well done. The pod race itself is cool, with some really nice 3D moments, particularly the shots of Anakin in his cockpit with the views of the other racers and the terrain behind him. The battle droids vs Gungans battle also has some really cool 3D moments.

And it's basically the Blu Ray version of the movie in 3D, with the fully CGI Yoda.
