Like any TOS fan, I was on the fence on this, but I must say it was a great movie. The actors captured the characters without resorting to cariactures of the original actors.

I personally think they need to get away from following anything having to do with those early movies. Wrath of Kahn is truly the best installment in that original set of Star Trek films. It also created a storyline regarding Spock that I don't care to follow again. If this movie series feels it needs to be repetitive this early on, then it's already in trouble from where I stand. Surely the vast Star Trek universe has more to tell than just those original stories, yes?

Point taken. But it still worked. Scotty has kind of been exaggerated in the public's mind over the years, much like Shatner's overacting pauses and hand gestures. I'm glad Pine didn't try to do that, although he still had some of Shatner's dramatic flare, which works for the character of Kirk.

Maybe this film will have an early encounter with Kahn? I also dont see the need to redo old storylines (like the new superman movie is doing if I undersand correctly). I dont mind some tweaking if its to help make an excisting storyline more interesting.
Ill probably watch this movie soon to see how they handle the characters. It cant be nearly as bad as that lost in space movie from years ago or Star Trek Nemesis.

Theres not many who can do it the way he does and get away with it.

Shatner gets a lot of grief for his "hammy" "over" acting, but it's really just stage acting. He brings a broader stage style to most of his work, especially his earlier work. The fact is lots of TV actors were like that back then. Very few dramatic shows from that period have endured like TOS, so therefore Shatner comes across as a hammy over-actor.

I never once doubted Shatner as Kirk, or in any role, so for my money, he's a fine actor.

OK, my 2 cents. As someone that loves TOS I was unsure about the new movie. As much as I'd like at times to say I hate it I can't, it's not a bad movie. As others have mentioned the Spock / Uhura thing was out of totally place and Scotty wasn't done quite right for me. Think of it as "Elseworld" Trek and keep TOS fondly in your memory. Actually I would have liked it better if they hadn't connected it to TOS with Spock and time travel - just started from scratch with the concept and not have the changes because of altering time.

Also, IMHO, for the second movie it should be Klingons ( the human looking ones ) as villians.

The only problem with Klingons is the sequel shows established the Klingons are good.

Going back and making them bad seems like something producers might not like doing.

They would probably rather forget them or keep them in the background

But this is an altered time line, maybe Klingons ARE bad in this universe.

The Federation was in conflict with the Klingons and eventually made peace and became allies in several wars, so its not a big deal to go back to the Kirk days and still see them at odds.
