I don't know how much Star Trek even influenced Star Wars. If anything Star Wars feels like it's trying to NOT be Star Trek to me. Maybe in that way it was an influence, I guess.

On the flip side there's little question that "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was the direct result of Star Wars' success.

I don't think one is better than the other - I don't really compare them. (Though I personally think the first Trek movie was a train wreck.)

True. The success of Star Wars and the cinematic sci-fi resurrgence it triggered really gave Paramount the impetus to see what sci-fi properties they owned, and resulted in ST:TMP finally getting off the ground.

Star Wars vs Star Trek arguments are nothing new. It's like Marvel vs DC debates. Everyone has their favourite, but most actually like both.

But yeah, Star Wars is better.

Is it just me, or was Yoda based on Ruth Westheimer?

First of all...I'm a Trekkie...so the following is not anti-Trek...not one bit.

Star Trek has never really been that big outside the USA...take a good look at all their overseas film box office numbers...even the new Star Trek movie.

Take Mexico for example...they go gaga over Star Wars...but Star Trek has never caught on.

Oh wait...I take it all back...

I think both concepts are exhausted, commercially speaking. I really liked the new Star Trek movie. But it remains to be seen whether it can retain enough of the old fan base to justify big budget films. Star Wars is a little different. Artistically it died after Empire. But it seems to have an eternal life in the toy isle. Whether Lucas can make one more trilogy remains to be seen. The actors from the original trilogy are getting awfully old to add them to a final installment. But I guess anything is possible with Lucas.

Who needs actors? All he'll do is CGI them in.

But that's the thing...true Trekkies were not enough for the older flicks...only Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, managed to crack the 100 million box office mark.

The new Star Trek was BY FAR...the highest grossing Trek film ever...even with adjusting the box office grosses.

The new Star Trek have proven that you don't have to be a nerdy Trekkie to make them successful...they are stand alone films now.

I honestly think the new Trek works because it's backing off from the standard "harmonic camaraderie in the clouds" profile. Not to say that isn't a good thought. It's great. But Trek got to where they were laying it on so thick, it became a parody of itself. You would have these voluptuous women walking around in sexually suggestive tights, while the men acted like 40 year old virgins clueless to what was standing in front of them. "Good morning Captain Farrah. My, but it's chilly on the bridge this fine morning."

To bad theres no one really around to debate how much Trek and SW are influienced by Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon comic strips/serials/novelizations. (and the other early scifi from the middle part of the 20 century. Now THAT would be really interesting.
