Has the Doctor ever travelled with just a male companion?

The wife asked me this question last night. Particularly since we feel that Rory is the more interesting companion, despite that Amy is obviously closer to the Doctor. If they were to leave the TARDIS, it feels like Amy has reached a satisfying conclusion to her arc, but given that Rory sees right through the Doctor's posturing these days (particularly in the two Amy's episode) it would be fascinating to see what their dynamic would be like without Amy.

The formula generally sees The Doctor traveling with one female companion mostly, but my knowledge of pre-boot Doctor Who is spotty. There is probably an episode or two with only Adric or Turlough between female companions during the Fifth Doctor for example. Has there been any extensive traveling with just a Male companion in the history of Who? I've never seen Troughton episodes, but he's always just with Jamie when they do the multi-Doctor Crossovers. Was this the status quo at any point during the second doctor?

Were there episodes without a female assistant where the third Doctor just hung out with the UNIT guys?

I think you nailed it.., I only recall Adric and Turlough alone for a televised story or two as actual 'companions', ie, traveling places with him in the TARDIS....

Jaime and the second Doctor in "The Two Doctors" leaps to mind.

            Hmmmm....

Did the Doctor travel with just Ben way back in the day ornot? I think his tenure as a companion was during the lost episodes time, so I'm not sure.

....and did the 4th Doctor travel with just K9 for a few? Does that count?

              More importantly does Frobisher count?

                Frobisher always counts.

Tom Baker and K-9 had a few adventures where it was just the two of them.

There was also a brief period where the first Doctor only had Steven by his side. I'm thinking specifically of the Time Meddler and the Massacre, but there may be more.

Has it been suggested but not shown that he has spent time with Capt Jack.

Well I'll be damned, you're right. And Dodo was in the Massacre. Holy crap, the First Doctor had some SERIOUSLY boring, forgettable female companions.

Vicki's alright, considering her entire thing is "like Susan, but not". I wish Susan had done more....

Did Troughton ever just travel with Jamie then? Where in the continuity would that fit in regards to Two Doctors, Five Doctors, Three Doctors etc?

I though Captain Jack was always around with Rose in that first season?

Do you guys differentiate between "recurring characters" as companions vs characters that have had multiple adventures traveling in the Tardis with the Doctor? Technically, the UNIT guys were never really companions in that sense. Also Donna's Grandfather, or even the Lodger returning next week falls under this more ambiguous category.
