The Massacre had only Steven, Dodo joins them in a last second scene just by entering the tardis , she thinks is a police box, her real scene is in the next story.

Ben was always with Polly and Jaime Joined the Doctor in Troughton's 2nd story and didn't leave until Pat Troughton left, thier time in the 2 Doctors supposedly takes place during the second year with victoria and she's been dropped off and thery are going to come back to her. it doesn't make sense but....

4th and Adric had the one story where Nyssa was introduced but left behind at the end.

5th and Turlough had his last story and Peri shows up in the first minute.

10th and wilf rounds it out.

        >Do you guys differentiate between "recurring characters" as companions vs characters that have had multiple adventures traveling in the Tardis with the Doctor?

I think the convention is that if you travel in the TARDIS you're a companion.

Using that definition Adam (from the 2005 series) and Vincent van Gogh are companions. Ugh.

What if you only travel in say a single episode, but are a recurring character? Does that differentiate between a single serving character that has travelled in the Tardis? (van gogh)

Donna's Grandfather or the former FBI agent this season? (in his case recurring as an old man years later to deliver a gas can... And I'm assuming in the finale as well). The brigadier travelled in the Tardis at least once didn't he?

Plus, as much as I love him, the Brigadier isn't "a companion" even though he travelled in the TARDIS multiple times and was a recurring character.

In the "Best of the Companions" special, they interviewed the FBI guy, who iterated the TARDIS travel rule.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's a bit of a goofy thing to try to define.

This week's episode also brings up the question of who has been offered the chance to travel as a companion in the Tardis, but either died or refused or couldn't for whatever reason?

We had the woman whom the Doctor extended the offer to this week. Kylie Minogue died during the David Tennant Christmas special on board the Titanic after he gave her the opportunity. Donna Noble of course originally refused, but ended up going with him a year later I think.

                    Anyone else?
