Dr Who - The Impossible Astronaut

Honestly, I didn't love last season. I liked a lot of things about it, though. However, I'm starting to miss RTD as of late. There was so much oddball, random crap going on in these two episodes that I just didn't get much enjoyment out of them and we're still getting really poor deus ex machina endings anyway. At least RTD was more subtle in his build ups and character development.

Did we really need every member of the cast killed off in the first two episodes for dramatic effect? Only to have that reversed in a matter of minutes? It just zapped all the importance out of these scenes with lame fakeouts. But I digress.

Hopefully the next episode is good.

What irks me the most is the whole "is the kid The Doctor and Amy's or not?" deal going on.

Bad Wolf and even Mr Saxon was much better.

I can't get used to the Smith episodes because I can't understand half the things going on.

Sometimes when I get really frustated I pop in a Pertwee or Tom Baker.

Then I can enjoy a Dr Who in peace and it's not a chore

So far so good with this season, it's looking very good and love the 70s vibe they have going. It's about time Dr Who made you think and second guess a little...long gone are the days where RTD's lazy writing ruled the roost, thank God!

These were fun episodes. A bit confusing...yes, but a much better start than last season. I am glad the Davies era is over. The show is trying to reach a wider audience and raise the bar in storytelling. It is become less and less of a british kids show. Thankfully. And. I just love Matt Smith....can't get enough of his take on The Doctor.

You guys can't tell me your didn't freak when that little girl regenerated at the end of episode. I fell out of my chair.

They pulled off the complexity of last season fairly well, so I'm on board this one. I did think we were finally going to get some answers about river, hopefully the payoff will be worth a multi season buildup.

I thought we had finally put the doctor and his companion love triangle to rest for a while. Hopefully it sticks. Rory has some great potential now that they have gotten him past all that insecurity. I'd like to see him a little more Harry and less adric.

I have to agree with some of the above.
I also feel the stories are more complicated than they should be, with some many inter-episode references that you need a map.
To be honest, Moffat used to be my favorite writer, but now he's just gone overboard within his own universe.
I don't mind an intelligent story, challenging the little grey cells, but at time it feels very much outside of the Who realm.
I also dislike the idea of the "Invincible Doctor". They challenge him one minute with an impossible task "He'll never escape from this super prison!" or "They've just gunned down the entire cast!", and five minutes later the Invincible Doctor just turns it all around and it's all good again. It no longer feels exciting to me, it's like he's Superman.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again: it's poor writing if you always use a Deus Ex Machine solution to every problem.

Just been reading a press report in the UK newspaper that says official viewing figures for the second episode were down over 1 million from the first one.

Also as the show was shown at 6pm, questions are being asked if it is too scary and too complicated to be shown at such an early time to a family audience.

I'll bet that if i got a newspaper from the 60's someone was asking if the Daleks were too scary to show to young children in a 6pm time slot, however the lost viewing figures might be of some concern.

I think that the ratings will go up again.
Honestly, I believe the story might have been a little too weird for "the general audience", and I don't think younger kids will have liked it all that much.
But you can't go wrong with pirates, so the next one will do better, I think...

I'm sure there must be a worse episode than this, there has to be.

Wow, I just caught up on Day of the Moon along with Cuse of the Black Spot and I really enjoyed both. Great character moments and a fun plot in both. I couldn't be a happier Who fan.
