As a kid, I thought a POTA musical was a "couldn't miss" idea. My parents used to just go quiet when I mentioned it.

Okay, I'm pretty sure at this point this will rock on it's own merits.

In my opinion, when you try to make stuff like this too realistic, "gritty" and "modern" it starts falling apart. The first Apes movie worked so well because it was basically a sci-fi fantasy movie that didn't try so hard to explain every tiny little detail of how and why.

Because even as smart and as strong as the escaped lab Apes in the new movie are they are still VASTLY outnumbered by humans and humans have guns. Lots of guns. Swat Teams and US military equals dead super apes.

The first movie was also dark without being beat you over the head about. It was set far enough in the future and removed enough from reality the audience could accept the world it created without trying to nit pik if every little detail worked or was scientifically acurate or even possible. You just accepted it and enjoyed the ride.

And lets not forget the award winning make up effects. At the time it was something no one had ever seen before. CGI is now old hat. Studios over use it and audiences have come to expect it. It doesn't have the wow factor it did even a few years ago because of it's overuse and over saturation. Disney learned that lesson with its recent mega bomb Mars needs moms. CGI doesn't guarentee money in the bank any more. Audiences also tend to prefer stylized CGI and find "realistic" jaring and creepy.

Hopefully it will be good. Maybe it will. I fully expect a ham fisted story and CGI effects without any restraint or thought put into it all in migraine inducing 3D. Did a CGI Ape make King Kong better? In my opinion, no. Will CGI Apes make Planet of the Apes better? I have my doubts.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Aren't they borrowing a little too much from Deep Blue Sea and the whole smart drug enhancement? It reads like the same thing except with apes instead of Mako sharks.

It does, but I'm kinda leary of what they'll do to the story. My biggest problem with the last one wasn't the look; it was how they sucked all the social commentary out of it.
