Your opinions ... Classic Sci Fi that isn't dated and dated
Mentions of UFO made me think.... the show WAS dated, and then it wasn't, and now it is again 'cos of how trends work. It was made in the 70's, and supposedly set in the 90's.... even though everything looked REAL 70's.... but what was cool in the real 90's? The 70's.
I also always thought having whole families on board was dumb and was a promise from the start most episodes would be boring.
I remember a bit that the original concept was the "Galaxy" class was ment to be a multi generational exploration ship designed to leave the galaxy. Hence the families, holodecks and at least 1 synthetic crewman to serve every generation. Would have been a better story. Instead the program got nixed and the best ship class in star fleet ends up running currior errands and mapping gaseous anomolies.
Any show set in it's era will refelct it's time from the tech perspective and like fashion will "date" it but that doesn't mean it's dated.
Techincally any reference to a Pay phone or phone booth (Superman's dressing room" is dated but is correct for the Fleisher cartoons shot when they were aplenty (and it makes the scene of the half booth in the first night sequesnce in Superman The Movie a great laugh as Chris looks for a place to change). Superman the movie itself isn't dated but the newsroom sure is becuase it was set it it's time
I think what Mike really means is some writing styles can becomre almost generic for an era and even in a sci fi film you can tell when it was made
