Some Good That Came Out Of Star Wars Prequels

As much as most didn't care for the prequels; I do think it brought a whole new generation of fans.

Some of you might not know this but Hasbro dropped the Star Wars license altogether back in the early 90's. Galoob Toys (which was eventually bought by Hasbro) picked up the license and started making micrmachine figures which were somewhat successful. When Lucas announced he would be doing 3 prequels....Hasbro realized they made a major mistake and ended up having to buy Galoob since they let the license lapse. If it weren't for the prequels; I don't think we would have ever seen the classic Star Wars figures ever made again. I know my son (who is now 16) loved the classic figures like Darth Vader, Boba Fett, etc. but I probably would have never thought to purchase the vintage figures for him nor do I think he would have been all that interested. I also know that a lot of you on the boards think that Hasbro has really overdone the Star Wars line (coming out with every minor character, variations of characters, etc.) but I think a lot of it had to do with recouping for the big mistake they made in letting the license lapse and having to purchase an entire toy company for their mistake.

    Don't forget the Bendies too.

I have no idea who made them but they predated any of Hasbro's 90's figures releases.

Actually I think they predated then overlapped Hasbro's first 90's POTF2's releases

Just-Toys made the Bendies in the early 90s, along with a slew of Marvel characters and others. They are still super cheap as well..

actually Kenner started making potf in 1995 2 years before the release of the special ed trilogy and 4 years before phantom menace in 1999. Which meant they started the devlopment of the line in 1993 (or early 1994) so I don't think you can credit TPM with the return of SW figs. what the prequels can be credited for was expanded the market beyond the adult collector back to kids to what we have today because the movie feeds the toy buying

People hate the prequels so much by saying "Their not the same as the OT" OK but I said this once and I'll say it again The OT was about LUKE'S story and the PT Was about ANAKIN now this common sense but was your life different than your dad and is your son/duaghters life different than yours? It's so simple the technology is different, times different etc. I thought it was good but nothing beats the original and I love how people love to ***** & complain about the PT anytime they can here's something don't watch it!! It kills me that people make up their own story about how Anakin became Vader,Where Boba Fett came from etc and when the man that CREATED comes out with a story years later they get bent...Grow up it's only a movie and we are all just fans..And:

actually most people's issues with the back story for Boba Fett and anakin was more a result of the licensees in comics, and books who created the backstory of the mandalorian knights and the fall of the republic in the 20 years between ROTJ and TPM. Lucas held totat creative control over his intellectual property and he never bothered to tell them not to create these stories meaning at the time he probably handn't bothered to figure it out himself, I think the Clone wars cartoon has been doing a great job to clean up the mess

and here I thought the best thing to come out of the prequels was Natalie Portman in skin tight spandex.

I thought she was too small and skinny

Regardless of her real age, when I look at her in those movies I kind of see her as a kid.

Now Carrie Fisher ... She was all woman

^ I have a SW documentary where Carrie is talking about the 'slave girl'/Jabba scene. She said that from the FRONT, that the brass-like bikini was fairly flattering, but from over the SHOULDER, IE: the crew that was BEHIND Jabba, you could "see all the way to Virginia!"

From a Fortune article "The Star Wars toy license has an intriguing history. In 1977, Lucas granted Kenner the exclusive rights to produce Star Wars toys in perpetuity for $100,000 per year. Back then, of course, no one realized how valuable that right was, and for years Kenner made millions of dollars selling little plastic Princess Leias and R2-D2s. In 1991, Hasbro bought Kenner. But by then, sales of Star Wars toys were nonexistent, so a Hasbro accountant figured he could save the company $100,000 by not sending George Lucas a check. A year later a Lucas employee saw Galoob's product line at a trade show and asked the company whether it would be interested in making Star Wars toys. Galoob's management jumped at the chance, launched its own Star Wars line, and promoted it heavily..."

"Some executives believe that the popularity of the toys motivated Mr. Lucas to re-release the movies, which turned out to be a money maker for Mr. Lucas as well as for the Galoob Toy Line".

Kind of the chicken and the egg question.

That's true, the Clone Wars cartoons are every bit as good (personally better) than the prequel films.
