ST Voyager: The original Janeway

Well if the show didn't compare to TNG or TOS, it don't really think its her fault. True she ain't better than Picard or Kirk, but she was very good & better than many men that might've played the role & as an asides, she was really a neccessary development of the Trek series showing development as regards equality of the sexes etc.

One good way to look at "best Captain" is put yourself on the ship in a lowly position.

Who would you want as the Captain ?

Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway or Archer ?

I personally would pick Sisko

This is only from my swiss cheez memory, but I seem to recall that they were looking for a "Lindsay Wagner type" when they first announced the casting process.

For me Janeway is Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman in space.

My personal favourite is Picard, but from what I've seen of DS9, I think Sisko has the balance of diplomacy and don't mess with me that would best keep a crew alive and Get the Job Done.

Never saw enough of Voyager or Enterprise.

Kirk if I were in a battle, Picard if I had a dispute to arbitrate with another crew member. Hmm, have to ponder the rest.

You also have to consider that the scenes with Bujold has no soundtrack nor special-effects sounds...while Mulgrew's scenes do...big difference...that tends to influence people a little bit...

i can't stand janeway. i think it was the writing more than the acting. (i actually like mulgrew. her husband worked in my wife's circle so we saw her as a politicians wife off screen. she's very nice.)

The producers said it was obvious that "it wasn't working" after only a couple days of shooting, and that's certainly what you see in those clips. They wouldn't have pulled the plug (which cost the studio time and $$) so quickly otherwise. Bujold was clearly overwhelmed and out of her element, and it showed. It just wasn't meant to be..

In truth, I found most of the crew of Voyager pretty unlikeable, with one or two exceptions.

It was only when Seven of Nine came into the show that I started to take any real interest in it.

And Neelix has to be the most annoying SF character ever.

right... plus Bujold's scenes are taken from the wide shots and don't include the cutaways and editing that tighten up the finished product.

I agree...while Kirk is seen as the bad arse captain...compared to Sisko...Kirk is a pussycat...

I wonder Mike. Lindsay has never had a role like that. I wonder if she could have pulled it off. Tough & authoratative with the crew, softer in her downtime moments in her ready room.

Hmmmm....

Most of what I didn’t like about Janeway had to do with the writing. She was presented as the ultimate Starfleet officer: she could command, run the ship, rebuild the engines.... she even helps the Doc with SURGERY at one point! The problem for me was that I couldn’t decide if she was supposed to be a super-genius, or if it was really bad writing for convenience. It would have helped if someone had commented about this, or at least looked surprised.

Picard. Same things that made me hate him as a fictional character would make him a good commander: level-headed, predictable, not prone to flincing. I HAD a commander like Kirk for a while.... makes for exciting times....
